Description

  • French oak
  • Ripe dark fruit
  • Vanilla & clove
  • Silky texture & polished tannins

"Ripe, dark fruited and black spiced bouquet. Aromas of fresh raspberry and dark berries, blackcurrant and pepper spice. Violets and clove, toasty wood and vanilla, youthful and intense, vibrant and varietal. On the palate – fleshy, fruity, ripe and textured. Plenty of pepper spice and black current, dark raspberry and toasty wood spice flavours. Complex, youthful, lengthy and seamless. Abundant tannins and acidity lay down a strong structure and foundation. A lovely wine with immediate appeal to Syrah drinkers. An excellent food wine choice. Drink now and through to 2024" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier

"The wine shows gorgeous sweet berry aromas with cake spice, dried herb, cedar and vanilla nuances on the nose. It's wonderfully focused on the palate, delivering bright fruit flavours combined with refined texture and grainy tannins, finishing persistent and delightfully dry. An elegant rendition offering seductive complexity and sophistication, needing time to show its graceful power and richness. At its best: 2022 to 2033" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Sep 2020

"Sleek, focused Syrah with floral, violet, raspberry, dark cherry, black pepper and nutty oak flavours. A bright, fruit-focused and seamless wine that is deliciously accessible now but will certainly repay those who can wait for a few years" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review

The 2017/2018 growing season has produced a Syrah exhibiting fragrant aromatics of violet, dark raspberry, liquorice and background spice. The finely styled palate shows good flavour concentration highlighting pristine fruit with dark cherry, plum and savoury oak complexity. Elegantly balanced with fine tannins and silky texture this seamless wine will age gracefully for 5+ years from vintage.

The 2018 vintage from the Omahu Gravels Vineyard has produced a perfumed and finely styled Syrah. A very warm season with above average growing degree days and below average rainfall provided the basis for a quality harvest. Moderate yields, good flavour concentration and a careful hand pick allowed winemakers to harvest this Syrah, and a small parcel of Viognier for co-fermentation, in excellent condition on the 8th of April.

Planted in 1998 the Omahu Gravels Vineyard is situated in the premium Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district where the soil is made up of relatively recent alluvial deposits of gravel with varying degrees of silt and sand. The naturally free-draining, low vigour and “lean” sites combined with detailed vineyard knowledge have produced a Syrah showing perfume, texture and underlying power.

Good concentration and structure but its so young and 'tight' two of us struggled to pick any flavours from the nose or palette! I suspect it will great with time but it will be another 3 years in the cellar before we try another bottle.
