Gibbston Valley Gold River Pinot Noir 2015
Description
Deep red colour. The nose exudes bright red fruit with some fragrance, earthy complexity. The palate is very approachable, lade with creamy red fruit, with good concentration and character.
The growing season for vintage 2015 was eventful. Spring was cool with a series of frosts and light canopy growth. Flowering in December happened quickly, with mixed results: generally lighter yields. Very dry, warm conditions through January lead to healthy and even ripening of smaller than average bunches. Sporadic rainfall in February ensured good soil moisture, and by March, ripening was progressing as normal. Sugar levels were attractively moderate whilst acid levels ran marginally higher than normal. In mid April, a cold snap meant that Gibbston fruit was harvested early. However, the fruit was uniformly clean, with a fine mineral crispness and excellent concentration. The vintage, lighter than normal, shows clear distinction of site and subregion and will showcase exciting wines as a result.
The Gold River Pinot Noir is an approachable style wine designed for early enjoyment. It is made in a custom befitting our top wines through - 100% handpicked, small batch fermented in open top fermenters and barrel aging in French oak, using high-quality Central Otago fruit.
