James Suckling New Zealand Wine Report, Nov 2019

Description

  • Dry style
  • Stone fruit
  • Gooseberry
  • Florals

Birght aromatics of citrus, stone fruit, florals and nettles. The palate is concentrated and vibrant, with gooseberry, tarragon, blackcurrant and nectarine flavours. This Mystery wine displays lovely mid-palate weight and texture, with a refreshingly crisp finish supported by some intriguing mineral and flint notes.

This Mystery award-winning Sauvignon Blanc hails from vineyards in the world renowned Marlborough wine region. These blocks tend to give passionfruit and tropical flavours with nice bright acids. This naturally low vigour, low yielding vineyard in the Awatere Valley produces wines with strong textural and mineral elements. This cooler site results in wines which exhibit concentration, fresh acidity and great length.

The 2017/2018 growing season was characterised by a hot, dry Summer, with healthy looking canopies and slightly lower than average bunch counts. This was followed by an extremely wet February, and then more sun in March. Flavours developed well during the warm months and so harvest started early.

The fruit for this Mystery wine was harvested from the best block from each of the Sauvignon Blanc vineyards. These blocks were selected for their great fruit expression as well as low cropping, and early ripening characteristics. The blocks were fermented separately, mostly in stainless steel tanks, before blending and then aging on light lees. 10% of the blend was handpicked, and whole bunch pressed directly to barrel, to ferment in 320 L French cigar-shaped barrels.

Food Pairing: This wine is a great match with all seafood, particularly shellfish. The crisp flavours work well with fresh Summer salads or try it with a soft goat cheese.

Lovely Sauvignon Blanc. Purchasing a mystery Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region was an easy decision as I'm pretty much guaranteed to enjoy it regardless of the winery....this wine certainly lived up to that expectation! Easy to drink (perhaps too easy..ha ha!) :)
