Description
"Supple pinot noir with taut, focused dark cherry, chalk, mineral, red rose and spicy oak flavours. An elegant wine with personality, energy and subtle power. A little closed at first but the aroma blossomed as the wine sat in the glass. Impressive purity" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Oct 2019
The resulting wine is bright, fragrant with ripe cherry and other red-fruit aromas. The palate is supple, deceptively concentrated with a distinctive limestone edge. It is delicious now, and we have no doubt that this complex wine will enhance further with bottle age.
The Pinot Noir at Rays Road was planted by the previous owners in 2008 with a variety of superior clones. We are very excited by the Pinot Noir from this limestone terroir, and the future of this vineyard is certainly very bright. The 2018 Village Pinot Noir was made entirely from this Hawkes Bay vineyard but there was one section that was distinctly superior to the rest, and it is this parcel that makes up the Kumeu River Rays Road Pinot Noir. The same parcel has also shown up as superior in the 2019 vintage.
After malolactic fermentation this wine was matured for 12 months in seasoned French Oak.
Food pairing: Slow-cooked beef short rib, smoked carrot puree, horseradish and kumara.
