2 x Delta Marlborough Pinot Gris 2018

Awarded 93/100 Points & 5 Stars: Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Apr 2019

"The wine is instantly appealing; the inviting bouquet shows ripe stone fruit, fresh pear, floral and subtle spice aromas, followed by a vibrant palate that is fleshy and smooth. The wine offers pristine fruit flavours together with textural mouthfeel, finishing long and tasty. At its best: now to 2021" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Apr 2019

Pale gold colour in the glass. The 2018 Delta Pinot Gris shows aromas of pear, quince paste and warm spices. On the palate, expect pure and elegant flavours or fresh white pear, soft spices and a flavoursome dry finish.

The fruit was sourced from vineyards in Marlborough's Lower Wairau Valley and the Omaka Valley regions. The 2018 vintage started with cool spring weather, which extended the length of flowering, leading to open bunches with reduced potential disease pressure during early autumn rains. Lower crop levels led to increased intensity of flavours within the grapes. Ripening steadily throughout the growing period, this fruit was continually monitored until the right balance of flavour and physiological ripeness was attained.

"Dark, deep, black-hued purple-ruby colour with good depth, a little lighter on the rim, youthful in appearance. The nose is elegant in presentation with fresh, bright, ripe, aromatic dark-red berry and black plum fruit, still quite primary in expression with floral and esters lift. Medium-bodied, the palate has a bright, lively and vibrant heart of primary dark-red berry fruit with subtle aromatic plum notes. The fruit is sweet with floral lift, unfolding hints of spices and dark herbs. The fruit is underlined by light, grainy tannin texture with a fresh line of acidity providing tension and energy. The wine carries to a clean and fresh finish of berries and plums. This is a bright and lively, primary fruited Merlot with berry and plum flavours with primary aromatic lift on a tight-textured, refreshing palate. Fruit from Hawkes Bay, trucked to the Marlborough winery and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 8 months in French and American oak." Raymond Chan, Jun 2018

"Still youthful, this single-vineyard red is deeply coloured, fragrant and full bodied, with greater intensity than you'd expect in its price range. Packed with plummy, spicy fruit, it is moderately firm, with a long life ahead"  Wine State, 2018

"Offering good value, the youthful 2017 vintage (4*) is a single-vineyard red, French and American oak-aged. Deeply coloured, it is fragrant and full-bodied, with concentrated, plummy, spicy flavours and a moderately firm finish. Best drinking 2020+" Michael Cooper, 2018

"Fabulously ripe and fragrant, the bouquet shows Black Doris plum, blueberry compote, floral and spice aromas with subtle toasted almond complexity. The palate is succulent and plump, delivering lovely mid palate weight and roundness, beautifully supported by silky texture and fine, chalky tannins. From the Gimblett Gravels district. At its best: now to 2021" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 2018

"Dark cherry, plum, baked  raspberry and brown baking spices of oak lead the bouquet. Dry with a firm youthful texture from abundant fine tannins , medium+ acidity and flavours of oak then red fruits of plum, dark cherry and raspberry. Balanced and well made, immediately enjoyable, totally drinkable. Best from today and through 2024" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Aug 2018

"Moderately dark ruby-red colour with some depth, lighter on the edge.  The nose has a firm core with good depth of dark cherry and raspberry fruit with suggestions of plums and liquorice.  The fruit is fresh and vibrant, unfolding a very delicate thread of dark and fresh herbs adding interest.  Medium-full bodied, the palate has an elegantly concentrated hearth with deep raspberry fruit along with notes of liquorice, spices and plums.  The fruit is sweet and rich and underlined by fine, grainy tannin extraction and structure, with balanced acidity lending energy.  The wine carries positively to a long, lingering, fruit-focussed finish.  This is a fresh, elegantly concentrated, youthful Pinot Noir with cherry, raspberry, liquorice and plum fruit flavours on a fine, grainy-structured palate with plenty of vitality.  Match with pasta, pizza, poultry and pork over the next 3-4 years.  Pinot Noir fruit, clones 115 and 777 from the ‘Delta Farm’ vineyard, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months, half in French oak and half in tank" Raymond Chan, Jul 2018

"Top wine from Delta vineyard in the Southern Valley subregion. Moderately dense and flavoursome pinot noir with dark cherry, berry, star anise and subtle spicy oak flavours. Sweet fruit balances interesting stalky complexity. A well-made wine with some cellaring potential" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review,  Jul 2018

A powerful, youthful red, it should be long-lived" Michael Cooper, 2018

"From the Southern Valleys, this is wonderfully fruited and seductive; the bouquet shows dark fruit, smoked game, vanilla, roasted hazelnut and truffle aromas, followed by a concentrated palate that is gracefully powerful. The wine offers terrific richness and plush mouthfeel, brilliantly supported by loads of fine tannins. It is engaging and flavoursome. At its best: now to 2022" Wine Orbit, 2018

"Well worth cellaring, this powerful young red was grown in the Waihopai Valley and matured in French oak barriques (33% new). Deeply coloured, it is mouthfilling and concentrated, with strong, ripe plum, spice and slight herb flavours, showing good complexity, and a well-structured finish" Winestate New Zealand, Marlborough Tasting, March 2019 Edition
