Lawson's Dry Hills The Pioneer Marlborough Pinot Noir 2013
Lawson's Dry Hills The Pioneer Marlborough Pinot Noir 2013
Description
The nose displays an appealing array of characters from raspberry and red cherry through to sweet, spicy French oak. Deep in colour, beautiful floral this wine is silky smooth with super fine tannins and a generous mid-palate, wonderful volume and length. The aim with this wine was for it to be both powerful and elegant.
The two vineyard blocks were harvested separately into two open top fermenters and held cold for a few days before undergoing spontaneous fermentation. Fermentation temperatures peaked at 32C with fermentation lasting three to four days. The wines were then kept on skins for a further two weeks before being pressed into French oak barriques (25% new) for sixteen months. The wines were then blended and gently filtered before bottling.
Produced from Lawson's own Wahopai Pinot Noir vineyard block (75%) which is a mix of clone 115 and 667 - harvested as a field blend with Biddy and Sion Barnsley’s Clone 5 from the neighbouring vineyard. These two vineyard sites have a wonderful mix of stones, alluvial soils and clay, which gives the resulting wine both weight and elegance.
Food Pairing: Roast lamb, duck or game.
