Description

The 2017 Cellar Selection Marlborough Chardonnay has subtle aromas of butterscotch, roasted almonds and fresh peaches. On the palate, fresh citrus flavours such as grapefruit and lemon are balanced with savoury baking spices and a hint of toasty oak on the finish.

The climate in Marlborough has high sunshine hours but temperatures during the growing season are regulated by the cooling ocean influence. Colder weather in spring led to a longer than usual flowering season, resulting in looser smaller bunches. Summer temperatures were unusually mild for Marlborough, cool easterly breezes and light cloud cover were common features of the season. The 2017 blend is a combination of Wairau Valley and Awatere Valley vineyards, on a mixture of clay, silt and stony soils.

This wine is produced using a mixture of hand-harvested whole bunch pressed fruit as well as selective machine harvested fruit that is whole berry pressed without crushing. The resulting clear juice is transferred to barriques for fermentation, 20% indigenous fermentation, 80% is inoculated with specialised Chardonnay yeast strains. The final blend spent 9 months in oak, in a mixture of oak formats; 15% new and 85% seasoned older barriques, mostly from French oak forests and coopers.
