Description
Deep crimson in colour with a brooding savoury nose and a mix of wild black and red berries. Palate shows considerable power and earthy character. Robust fruit tannin provides a finish that is long and alluring.
Certified organic from predominantly ungrafted vines, managed by hand with limited irrigation. Planted in a variety of clones on calcareous clay soils on the gradual Omihi slopes. Long stretches of hot, dry weather produced optimum fruit ripening at harvest. Hand-picked early morning while fruit was cold, small quantities of intensely flavoured and perfectly ripened fruit delivered to the winery.
Muddy Water carefully hand-picked this Pinot Noir from three separate blocks over a four-week period. All fruit is hand sorted in the winery before a natural
fermentation. Left for a full month on skins with daily hand plunging for yeast health and extraction of flavour and tannins. After a long post-fermentation maceration, the young wine is pressed into fine-grained French oak barriques (30% new), where it matures for 16 months. The 2016 Pinot Noir was bottled onsite without fining or filtration.
