Huon Hooke, Real Review, Nov 2018

Description

"Medium to deep red/purple: a deep, bright, youthful colour for a pinot, and the aroma is tremendousy perfumed, with powerful dark cherry, floral and spicy aromas, The wine is intense and refined, tautly-structured and very finely-textured, the tannins mild and gentle, with a trace of bitterness, which actually adds a pleasing aspect to the cleanness of the finish and aftertaste. A most impressive wine which is astonishing value for money (Triple trophy winner, Sydney International Wine Competition 2019, including champion wine of show)" Huon Hooke, Real Review, Nov 2018

Bright cherry in the glass, the Rua is typical of Central Otago Pinot Noirs, with a core of juicy red berry fruit and uninhibited by heavy oak influence. An abundance of bright red fruits, and lifted floral aromas, with a touch of savouriness. This Central Otago Pinot Noir is lavishly layered with sweet, ripe, red berries, underpinned with savoury characters and a touch of spice. Supple tannins flow softly across the palate. These are balanced by the wines acidity, leading to a long fruit driven finish.

Award-winning Akarua is the largest privately owned single-estate vineyard in Central Otago, with 50 hectares of stunning vineyard. First planted in 1996 by Sir Clifford Skeggs. The Akarua team are focused on managing the quality of the fruit in the vineyard through to winemaking in their winery; giving them complete control from vineyard through to bottle. Bannockburn, the sub region in Central Otago where Akarua is located has been described as the 'jewel in Central Otago's crown'.

Grapes for this wine recieved a pre-ferment maceration of 5 days before spending 7 months in French oak barrels for maturation (10% new with the balance in older wood). The result is a style that has been deliberately made to drink as a young fresh red.

Very pleasant to drink with or without food. Smooth with soft and not too light. It has character. Will buy again.

There is not a lot of wine from central Otago especially pinot noir that isn't excellent

A consistently good Southern Pinot for the money. Fruit driven with good weight and length. Perhaps the best quaffer from down that way.
