Te Mata Estate Hawkes Bay Merlot/Cabernets 2015

AWARDED 19/20: Raymond Chan, March 2017

"Dark, deep, black-hearted red, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly concentrated with ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruit aromas with nuances of tobacco and lifted oak. The aromatic are deep and intense, with breadth and proportion. Medium-full bodied, the palate possesses deeply concentrated, ripe flavours of blackberries, blackcurrants and dark-red plums. Complexing herb, tobacco and aromatic oak detail add complexing interest. The fruit is supported by very fine-grained, but considerable tannin extraction providing body, depth and a core of presence. The acidity is softly ripe and fine, and balanced with the textures. This has a completeness and the balance lends approachability. The wine has a very long, lingering sweet finish, unveiling cassis elements. This is beautifully ripe and balanced for keeping 8-10 years" Raymond Chan, Mar 2017

Deep crimson with a floral lift and charm, Estate Merlot/Cabernets ’15 has a beguiling, aromatic intricacy with a core of sustained, poised, ripe fruit on the palate. Chocolatey merlot, and sumptuous raspberry and blackberry notes from cabernet franc give a supple weight to the wine. The tapenade and dried herb of cabernet deepen the savoury appeal and varietal expression. Artfully crafted, graceful and svelte, Estate Merlot/Cabernets ’15 is a deceptively elegant wine.

The grapes were harvested from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards in the Bridge Pa Triangle, Havelock Hills and Woodthorpe Terraces sub-regions of Hawke’s Bay. Then the individual parcels for each variety, from each plot, were de-stemmed before a traditional warm fermentation, followed by extended maceration on skins. Seasoned French oak barrels for 8 months’ maturation before blending. The final blend is 52% merlot, 28% cabernet sauvignon, 16% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. This wine will continue to evolve in bottle for three to six years from harvest.

Food Pairing: A wonderful accompaniment to hard cheeses and anything that once lived in a field.

Te Mata Estate Hawkes Bay Gamay Noir 2017

A cherry bon-bon on the nose, Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir ’17 entices with fresh raspberry, juicy strawberry and sweet, red, toffee-apple. Cherry-red with a vibrant purple edge, gamay’s soft tannins give the palate moreish balance and weight. Flecks of aniseed and baking spices run through to the long finish. Delicious with depth, sippable with substance, Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir ’17 has character and charm, as well as oodles of red fruit freshness and immediate appeal.

The unique ‘maceration carbonique’ fermentation, which enhances the fruit and floral aromas of the wine, was used for 53% of the grapes. The other 47% received a traditional, warm, red wine fermentation. The resulting wines completed their malolactic fermentation and were matured for nine weeks in seasoned French oak barrels, before blending and bottling. Whilst this Gammy Noir can be enjoyed immediately either served at room temperature or, during summer, lightly chilled, it will continue to develop in bottle for two years from harvest.
