Description

"Made from grapes grown in Bendigo upper terraces using 35% whole clusters in the fermentation. Fragrant, floral aroma with violet, cherry and spice characters
on the palate. A powerful pinot noir with a firm structure of drying tannins. Promises to offer impressive complexity with bottle age. Drink 2016 to 2025." Bob Campbell, MW August 2016

"Estate-grown at altitude (320 metres above sea level) in the China Terrace Vineyard, at Bendigo, the 2015 vintage was hand-picked and matured for 11 months in French oak casks (30 per cent new). Deep and youthful in colour, it is a powerful, mouthfilling wine, finely balanced and supple, with densely packed, ripe cherry, plum and spice flavours. Still a baby, it has obvious potential for cellaring; best drinking 2019+. Michael Cooper NZ Wine Buyers Guide 2017

Deep red coloured. Serene and calm, the wine is enriched in a lovely earthiness. Garlanded with pretty red fruit aromatics, it opens into a sturdy wine, with typical China Terrace tannins punctuating the palate. Complex and brooding, with many years ahead of it.

The China Terrace Vineyard is located in the Bendigo sub region of Central Otago. Gently sloped on the lower edge of a large terrace (named China Terrace), it unfolds Pinot Noir and Chardonnay over some 6 hectares. Being over 320m, its retains a coolness relative to Bendigo’s natural warmth. This, and the complex accumulation of loess, clay and schist in its soil, gives wines of fresh, bright complexity. Picking typically occurs early to mid April.

After a very cool spring, flowering in December happened quickly, with lighter yields. Dry, warm conditions through January lead to healthy and even ripening of smaller than average bunches. Sporadic rainfall in February ensured good soil moisture. By March, ripening was progressing as normal with perfect brix levels and slightly higher acid levels. Fruit was harvested clean, with a fine mineral crispness and excellent concentration. The vintage, lighter than normal, shows clear distinction of site and sub region
