SINGLE VINEYARD - GIMBLETT GRAVELS

"Elegantly structured, the core of this wine is dark fruit, exotic spices and a seam of dark cocoa carries its savoury concentration through to the long, pillowy finish where earthy, graphite-like layers appear. It has freshness and verve, nice 'chew' and loads of chutzpah" Yvonne Lorkin

Description

Fruit harvested from the exemplary 2014 Hawke’s Bay vintage has produced this shining star Syrah.  It’s sourced from a single vineyard within the famed Gimblett Gravels, adding further fuel to it’s pedigree.

"Very dark, saturated black-hued purple-red colour, very youthful in appearance.  The nose is elegantly concentrated with intense and penetrating, fragrant aromas of black and dark red berry fruits, firmly entwined with notes of black pepper, violet florals, piquant Asian spices and liquorice.  Nuances of funky game and iron-earth add detail.  Medium-full bodied, this has a tightly bound core of juicy and succulently rich flavours of ripe blackberry fruit interwoven with plums and black pepper, along with Asian spices and violet florals.  The palate is complexed by earth and mineral elements.  The tannin extraction is fine-grained, and the mouthfeel is enlivened by bright acidity, providing a concentrated, firm core and line that carries to a long, fine-textured finish.  This is a tightly concentrated, rich and succulent Syrah with fine structure and plenty of energy.  Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes, and semi-hard cheeses over the next 5-7 years.  A single vineyard wine, 100% estate Syrah, fermented to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 20% new oak." Raymond Chan

" The impenetrable, inky-dark colour saturation is the first thing that gets you with this wine, it's incredibly dense, dark, a stormcloud in a glass.   Perfumed with blackcurrant, cherry and pepper-dusted damson plums, the nose is exciting, spice-driven and has smoke around the edges.  Elegantly structured, the core of this wine is dark fruit, exotic spices and a seam of dark cocoa carries its savoury concentration through to the long, pillowy finish where earthy, graphite-like layers appear.     It has freshness and verve, nice 'chew' and loads of chutzpah." Yvonne Lorkin

Had to order another dozen after trying my first bottle of this. Simply a stunning huge NZ red wine. Who needs over sweet Aussie Shiraz when you can have an elegant NZ Syrah with the body of this beauty.

Really good Hawkes bay syrah from a Great vintage. Cellar or drinking we'll now when it's opened up and got up to room temp. Would by again, and probably will if they don't sell out!

I'd love to give this wine 4.5 stars if I could! Excellent buy at this price and will benefit from a few years cellaring if you can resist drinking it.
