Description

(93pts) Wine lovers this is it!  Sensational Bordeaux inspired offer from the stellar 2013 Hawkes Bay vintage.  Sourced from the illustrious Gimblett Gravels region and masterfully crafted by industry heavyweights: Viticulturalist, Bob Newton and Winemaker, John Forrest from Forrest Estate.  Sumptuous, decadent and noble, royally drinkable, heart-stopping value right here.

"A blend of merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and malbec from Gimblett Gravels. A dense, tight red with layers of dark berry and spicy oak contained by very fine graphite-like tannins. An impressive wine that only hints at its potential." Bob Campbell, MW

"Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red with purple on the rim. This has a firmly concentrated nose with good depth of ripe black-berried fruits entwined with blackcurrants, savoury iron-earth layers and nuances of spicy black plums and suggestions of black pepper. This has penetration and intensity, whilst retaining a degree of elegance and proportion. Medium-full bodied, the palate features concentrated and deep flavours of ripe black berried fruits alongside black plums, spices and pepper, melded harmoniously with black minerals and iron-earth flavours. This has a tight core with fine-grained, powdery tannins with significant extraction and structure that carry the wine to a long, elegant finish with reserved, but lingering flavours of black fruits and minerals. This is an elegantly concentrated, black-fruited Merlot blend with iron-earth and mineral length and fine-grained structure. Match with lamb, beef, venison and semi-hard cheeses over the next 7-8+ years. A blend of 51% Merlot, 23% Syrah, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Malbec, the fruit from the ‘Cornerstone’ vineyard, the wine aged 16 months in 15% new French oak." Raymond Chan

"A gorgeous rendition of Bordeaux-style, this blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec and syrah from their Cornerstone Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels district is instantly appealing. The fragrant bouquet shows cassis, blueberry, game and cedar characters. The palate is concentrated and finely textured, with excellent fruit richness as well as purity, leading to a persistent, delicately drying finish. Brilliantly expressed and classically structured, while offering excellent drinking" Sam Kim Wine Orbit, Nov 2015

Succulent, soft, yet full bodied blend of merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and malbec. From the heart of the Gimblett Gravels renowned wine region.

The malbec flavour makes this wine special

John - 07/07/2016

rich colour , nose to match , long tannin on the pallet - and to use the S&P style of rating as value for money - AA. look forward to the mid-winter meals . This is a serious heavyweight. Might keep a couple aside for 3-4 years to see.

This is a pleasing wine-deep rich flavours with a slight peppery finish. Great with food or enjoy on its own

Philip - 27/05/2016

Good honest red that offers plenty for the price point. Given the winemaker I was hoping for a little more richness but looking forward to seeing how it develops over the next few years.

John - 17/05/2016

Pretty darn stunning for the money.

Steven - 16/05/2016

T
OK for the price

Tony - 27/08/2016

Good colour and clarity with strong pip fruit flavours, and good texture. Tanins appear to be softening, making for a pleasant drop when accompanied by red meat and hearty winter fare.

Fernando - 17/07/2016

C
Likes it's austere label this wine is a solid performing wine at this price with well balanced flavours perhaps limited by it's over blending with perhaps the Syrah and Malbec not adding anything to the mix. It will suit those that want a brisk style of dry claret rather than an overblown fruit bomb from Australia. Would I buy this again at this price point? Yes.

Conrad - 12/07/2016

M
Dry, definitely Bordeaux style, mixed bag red

Martyn - 15/05/2016
