Description

  • French oak
  • Black cherry
  • Subtle white pepper
  • Solid tannins

"Beautifully maturing with enticing complexity, the wine shows dark berry, dried herb, leather and toasted nut aromas on the nose. The palate delivers medium-full weight and fine texture, wonderfully structured by grainy tannins, making it firm and sturdy. It's sweetly fruited with rich spicy/savoury notes, finishing long and attractively dry. At its best: now to 2027" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Oct 2023

"2014 was a stonking vintage for Hawke’s Bay reds, so there’s very little to be found on the market now, however, a happy coincidence has meant that there’s a tiny amount still available. Now it’s maturing into a wine that’s moving from its initial berry purity to a wine boasting savoury layers, meaty, leathery characters and hints of white pepper. It has excellent length of flavour, and solid, gripping tannins. Osso buco? Oh, yeah!" Yvonne Lorkin, Jul 2022

Eight years old and going strong. Those fruit-driven aromas are replaced with sweet pipe tobacco and black olives. The palate is where aged reds come into their own! Mouthfeel is sweet, full and engaging. The warmth of alcohol really shows the generous flavours, hints of dry meats, and black cherry from this wine’s youth still showing. The wine’s colour is deep, black reds, just the hint of age showing. This cool-climate Syrah will not disappoint.

The Ohiti Valley’s microclimate and gravel soils offer optimum ripening conditions as well as protecting the natural acidity of the wines. Sheltered but open to the adjoining river the Gravels blocks display the full benefits of the biological farming practices and environmental sustainability which are the foundation of our approach.

Excellent quality wine. Lovely fragrance, peppery nose but not on the palate so my pepper-averse friends still enjoyed it. Savoury, dry, delicious, very enjoyable.

Seems very complex. I prefer drinkability sooner rather than much later
