Transparency. Not just visually bright in the glass but an unimpeded look through the wine to the fruit of the vineyard. The 2020 Providore Pinot Gris captures the essence of a summer spent in the Gibbston Valley. The cooler mornings reflected in the bright acidity and freshness. The long warm evenings lending ripe stone fruit and citrus to the experience. A perfect summer wine offering great fruit intensity and a refreshing, balanced finish.

The 2020 growing season started of cooler than normal. This meant early growth in the vineyard was slow. Thankfully, this colder start did not result in any major frost events with the district getting through mostly unscathed. This slow start to the season was followed by a wet period throughout November and December that resulted in the Wanaka township experiencing flooding. This coincided with flowering meaning vineyard took longer to flower than is the norm. This protracted flowering meant the bunch development was inconsistent with different sized bunched and berries on the same vine. Once the rains had past the weather settled into a warm summer. This meant good ripeness was able to be achieved. Autumn to was dry but a touch cooler so a long late harvest was possible. Again, no sign of frosts in the Autumn meant the fruit could be left for longer to get the last of the summer heat. Harvest was later due to the cooler Spring and Autumn, but ripeness and quality were very good. Yields were down due to the poor weather at flowering, but this meant the vines were in balance for the milder temps.

This single vineyard Pinot Gris was picked by hand on the 8th of May 2020. Coming exclusively from the cooler Gibbston Valley gives the wine its brightness and fruit intensity. The fruit was pressed and whole bunches and the pristine juice was cold settled. Once racked it was inoculated with a yeast selected for its ability to showcase the crisp stone fruit characters of the vineyard. The fermentation was stopped retaining a touch of natural sugar to perfectly balance the fresh citrus notes.

Food Pairing: Perfect for outdoor summer cuisine such as grilled fish with lemon or fresh garden salad with vinaigrette. Serve chilled and outdoors is our serving suggestion.
