Description

  • American & French oak
  • Berry fruit
  • Vanilla bean
  • Firm tannins

"This is superbly ripe and perfumed on the nose showing dark fruit richness, vanillin oak, warm spice and dark chocolate aromas, followed by a concentrated palate offering plush texture backed by silky tannins. Wonderfully opulent and flavoursome with a richly expressed mouthfeel. At its best: now to 2030" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Feb 2023

"Approx. 14 months after vintage, Scott and I undertake a blind tasting to select the barrels from our McLaren Vale vineyards that make the grade for our Reserve Shiraz. These barrels are blended together then returned to new and seasoned American and French oak hogsheads for additional maturation prior to bottling" Winemaker

Highly aromatic nose full of spice, berry fruit, violets and hints of vanilla bean. On further inspection, savoury meats, herbs, leather and fresh cashew notes follow. On the palate, rich dark red berry fruits with firm tannin moving in indi-cation the potential longevity of this wine. The flavour and mouthfeel rolls from beginning to end finishing with clean acidity, ready for the next piece of steak.

Since establishing himself at Mt Hurtle winery in 1985 Geoff Merrill has achieved significant success at home and internationally. His elegant, subtle wines have culminated in major trophy wins including the coveted Jimmy Watson and The Wine Society Trophy. Geoff’s commitment to releasing wines to be enjoyed at the table has never wavered.

One of the earlier vintages, with mild weather playing an important role for the region. Rainfall was lower than average, with dry conditions from August meant supplementary irrigation was vital. A few sporadic hot days, the weather allowed natural acids with low pH levels to develop. Yields were slightly below average depending on variety. Overall 2015 was a successful vintage.

Food Pairing: Enjoy with a Angus T-bone, slow cooked beef brisket, Hoisin beef, slow cooked Swiss Brown mushrooms with soy and garlic.
