Description

"Strong green peppers and a green passion-fruit edge, too. The palate has slightly tart, raspy fruit that’s very green and savory. A blend of sauvignon blanc and semillon" James Suckling, 2019

The wine exhibits some flinty sulphide notes over aromatics of guava, gooseberry and nettles with undertones of lychee and chalk dust. The palate is fresh with vibrant acidity balanced by weight and texture from the barrel fermentation and a long persistent gin and tonic like finish. Gravestone 2017 is a blend of 75% Sauvignon blanc and 25% Semillon, fully fermented in barrel.

Vintage 2017 began with a settled and dry Spring resulting in great flowering and a corresponding excellent fruit set. Dry drought like conditions continued into January providing terrific fruit flavours and tannins before a number of intense periods of rainfall, culminating in the arrival of Cyclone Debbie wreaked havoc with the vintage. In 2017 our free draining hillside vineyards paid back the enormous effort that goes into working the steep sites producing fruit that was in very good physical condition that retained the ripeness of flavour despite the adverse weather.

This Sauvignon blanc was hand harvested off a number of hilltop blocks and was whole bunch pressed to directly to barrel for wild fermentation on full juice lees. The Semillon was gently pressed and settled before being racked clear for fermentation in old seasoned barrels. Following fermentation the wines stayed on lees for 9 months in barrel before blending.
