Description

"Bright and pristine, the inviting bouquet shows lemon curd, Gala apple, lime peel and floral characters. The palate is concentrated and focused, delivering fabulous fruit vibrancy and fine texture, brilliantly structured by lively acidity. At its best: now to 2022" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Feb 2019

This Mystery wine has an appealing pale straw colour with healthy green hues, important for wines destined for serious bottle ageing. The aromatics are fresh and lifted showing lovely lemon blossom, jasmine and mandarin peel character. In the mouth the wine is dry and refreshing, again in the lemon/lime spectrum with just a hint of the more exotic citrus fruit such as tangelo, pomelo or yuzu. Clean, silky acidity underscores these fruit notes giving the wine both spine and a definite mineral edge that draws the palate to long, slightly chalky finish A great Marlborough dry Riesling from a top season made in a seriously dry style and designed to last many years in bottle.

This 2016 Dry Riesling drinks well while young but will happily develop in the bottle for a further 6 - 8 years.

This organically grown single vineyard wine was grown on the winemakers home vineyard in the Waiphopai Valley. These vineyards lie on ancient river gravels brought down from the Southern Alps by the Waihopai River. And it is in these soils that our Riesling vines flourish under the watchful eye of the winemakers and their vineyard manager. Pruned and trained on the proven double arch cane system the vines give us small bunches of hugely concentrated flavourful berries packed with freshness and juicy acidity. In 2016 the weather was favourable, with rainfall at just the right time, crop loads were relatively low allowing us to ripen this crop to ideal parameters to make this wine.

The grapes were harvested at night to avoid oxidation, pressed gently with the free run juice separated and fermented in tank with a neutral yeast we believe best suits this exceptional vineyard site. The press fraction was fermented in older oak barrels to add a textural layer in the wine and impart a subtle waxy note to the aromatics. The wines were retained on lees over the winter and bottled early in the spring of 2016 in order to retain freshness and vibrancy.

Food Pairing: While young, enjoy with fresh seafood or poultry dishes such as spatchcock grilled with lemon, garlic and chilli. As it further develops it will lend itself to more complex flavours such as duck braised in stock, Asian spices like black cardamom and anise and served over Puy lentils with shavings of fresh fennel.

Nalda - 14/03/2019

A true dry Riesling at last. I love Riesling but hate all those sweet ones masquerading as off-dry . this one is flavoursome, refreshing, easy drinking on its own, with cheese and crackers or with your main meal.

John - 12/03/2019

I haven't forgotten to give this wine a star rating because there is no zero. I'm sure the "expert" who gave this 5 stars, must have tried the wrong wine or the previous vintage. A very expensive mistake!!

R
A very pleasant wine, will get better with cellaring, have tucked a few bottles away for 4 or 5 years away

Roy - 11/03/2019

A very pleasant dry Riesling. Good value for money at the 'mystery price' but wouldn't be prepared to pay the RR of around $20.00
