There are some real bargains to be found when you look beyond the grand châteaux names of Bordeaux. We've had close contacts here for over 20 years and continue that tradition with our Bordeaux-born buyer for the area, Jean-Baptiste (or JB as we call him) who has a talent at snapping up parcels of great-value, quality wines. Château Haut Chevalier is one, from a small winery close to Côtes de Bourg and Blaye. Like its Right Bank friends, Merlot is the favoured grape. On these silty, limestone soils this variety ripens well, producing rich, plummy character. What’s more it hails from the 5-star 2020 vintage. Forbes’ magazine sums up the excitement: “the overall take on vintage 2020 is – in a word: stellar.” Critic James Suckling enthused, "An outstanding quality level from first growths to petits châteaux”. This claret is brimming with smooth red and black fruits, with smooth tannins.
Food Pairing: Open early and serve with roast meats.
