Primitivo is a dark-skinned grape known for producing inky, opulent, full-bodied, wines with ripe blueberry/black cherry characters with hints of Mediterranean vegetation and powerful but well-rounded tannins.

Puglia is Italy’s largest wine region by plantings, second in terms of production. The warm Mediterranean climate and sandy, loamy soil of the Itria Valley make it a grower’s paradise. Primitivo comes from the Latin “primativus” meaning “first to ripen” and it is one of the first grape varieties to be harvested in Italy. This variety arrived was officially recognized in Puglia in 1881 but had been in the region for hundreds of years and has Croatian parentage.
