"An appealing and lively Pinot"

4 STARS: Sam Kim, The Wine Orbit

"A gently flavoured Pinot displaying red cherry, spice and a hint of game characters on the nose. The palate is juicy and smooth with good fruit weight and fine-grained tannins. An appealing and lively Pinot. At its best: now to 2012." Sam Kim, The Wine Orbit

"Fresh, alive Pinot, quite tasty in its fruit without being heavy nor over-oaked. Best beside food from chicken to veal and lamb. Shows its share of spicy cherry characters in the local Marlborough tradition. Clean, sound, enjoyable now, into... Read more »

"This vibrant pinot has a sinuous, savoury spine of tannin that spreads out to a long, silky finish"

Dark cherry melds with bright, lifted red fruit aromas and hints of spice in this exotic 2010 Pinot Noir. Floral notes are present too; old-fashioned violets and a touch of rose. This vibrant pinot has a sinuous, savoury spine of tannin that spreads out to a long, silky finish. Significant vine age, especially from the 30 year-old blocks, expresses itself in depth, breadth and complexity of character; a distinctive ‘sense of place’ so evident in Ata Rangi Pinot Noir. Vine age also contributes markedly to the consistency of quality year after year.

Looking back at the growing season, temperatures were generally lower than average through to mid-February. We crop thinned extensively in... Read more »

"Flavours of dark cherry and plum explode on the palate"

Gold Medal: NZ International Wine Show 2010

An elegant Pinot Noir with aromas of dark cherry and plums, with hints of clove and spicy oak. Flavours of dark cherry and plum explode on the palate. Aged in new French barrels gives some savoury notes and a full, long lasting finish.

Fruit for this wine comes from a single vineyard about 40 km south of Blenheim. The site has a unique micro climate ideal for producing top-quality wines. The soils have a high limestone content which adds slight mineral notes to the wine.

Drinking well now this wine will continue to reward over the next two to five years. A perfect... Read more »

"The wine is rich, yet velvety and elegant with a core of fine grained, ripe tannins"

On release the wine has a bright ruby hue. Its vibrant aromas and flavours suggest black cherries, blackberries, raspberries, mulberries and purple plums. There are intertwining hints of grilled mushrooms, liquorice and black olives. The wine is rich, yet velvety and elegant with a core of fine grained, ripe tannins which help to draw out its lingering flavour.

An early bud-burst was followed by a very mild spring, a warm summer and a balmy dry autumn. The weather allowed us to leave the fruit on the vine until it was optimally ripe. It was a splendid season in general and an exceptional one for pinot noir resulting in high quality wines.

"A full-bodied, solid and robustly structured wine"

Trophy & Champion Pinot Noir: Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2011

Pure Gold Medal: Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2011

Bright and full, purple-hued ruby-red. Youthful in appearance, this has a full nose of fresh, vibrant dark cherry, berry and plum aromas lifted with violetty notes and backed by spicy oak nuances. A full-bodied, solid and robustly structured wine, the flavours of ripe, dark berry fruit, liquorice and spicy plums are framed within a firm, but accessible palate that is underscored by soft acidity. The serious extraction carries the palate and forms a dry and lingering... Read more »

wild berries, plums and cherries with a hint of dried herbs and spice

Medium purple/garnet. Inviting aromas of wild berries, plums and cherries with a hint of dried herbs and spice. The flavours follow from the nose onto the palate and showcase the attractive fruit, spice and earth flavours of the Waipara Valley. Winemakers Notes

It's the extreme natural environments of the mountains, hills and valleys of the South Island that gives the wines of Waipara Hills its intensity, character and complexity - multi-award winning wine that expresses the true soul of the south. At Waipara Hills our philosophy is simple. It's about allowing the characteristics of each season's fruit to shine, then creating perfect balance with as little interference as possible. The result is wine that is rich, vibrant... Read more »

"A fresh fruit driven style with ripe red berries that lead to an elegant complex finish"

Ripe red fruits of red cherries and red currents, followed by bright lifted aromas of raspberry. The nose is complex with spice and a hint of savoury oak.
Bright and lifted, with raspberry and red cherry combined with strawberry and red plum. Well balanced acidity leads to an inviting and structured mid palate with fine grained tannin and an elegant long-lasting finish. Winemakers Notes

"fluid and mouth filling"

Silver Medal: Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2011

"Complex aroma shows blackberry, violet, black plum and briar rose. The palate is fluid and mouth filling with fine gentle tannins and rich, slightly chocolate flavours of blackberry, black plum and a little barrel char. This is a cohesive, concentrated wine, a pleasure to drink now but will reward cellaring up to 10 years."

The wine was made by hand in small open tanks, without the addition of yeast, very little intervention but constant and diligent attention. After 12 months in French oak barrels (33% new) the wine was racked clean and allowed to settle through the cold winter mouth and finally bottled without filling or... Read more »

"intense floral, perfumed notes and hints of sweet spice"

"great mouth-feel and a long finish"

These older vines deliver a complex wine with an amalgam of fragrant rose petals and earth aromatics. Every year it shows more fruit power and a distinct Gibbston piquancy. Attractive red cherry, violets and sweet spice combined with silky tannins excite the palate. This is a premium wine with body, great mouth-feel and a long finish to be enjoyed now but it will also age gracefully.

The slow ripening of vines in the Gibbston Valley enhances the development of colour and flavour. Gibbston wines shine through intense floral, perfumed notes and hints of sweet spice.

"The silky smooth palate is beautifully balanced"

"seamless, feminine and very approachable"

Crimson Pinot Noir 2010 is the wonderfully aromatic result of a cooler than normal summer and a warm, dry autumn that stretched lazily through to the end of our April harvest and well into May. Crushed rose-petal, light cherry, brambly notes and a hint of red licorice conspire to create an enchanting, heady fragrance. The silky smooth palate is beautifully balanced; seamless, feminine and very approachable. Crimson is sourced primarily from 10 to 20 year old vines, compared to 30 years plus for our oldest pinot vines. It is made in a style intended for enjoying within a few years of the vintage, with all the same care and attention as is given to... Read more »
