"It's fabulously expressed on the nose, showing cassis, subtle tobacco, anise and toasty oak aromas. The palate displays lovely concentration combined with refined texture and fine flow, leading to a sturdy yet supple finish. Wonderfully styled and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2033" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Oct 2023
"Fantastic colour and concentration with inky staining of the tears leading to a bouquet of ripe roasted blackberries and Doris plums, tobacco and barrel spices of clove and roasted vanilla pod, there’s a toasty wood seam and layers of cigar and warm rocky soil ideas. Dry with plenty of weight and concentration as the wine touches the palate. Flavours mirror the bouquet led by black berry fruits then plums and violets, baking spices and wood smoke. Tannins are firm and abundant with medium concentration, acidity youthful and fresh still. Well made, a leading style with best drinking from 2026 through 2034+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Oct 2023
Deep crimson in colour with a magenta hue. Intense aromas of blueberries, violets and maraschino cherry, with nuances of dark berries and French oak. Silky and vibrant, the wine bursts with intense black fruits, the palate is structured with the mid-palate balanced by fine, long tannins. This Cabernet is made to drink now, but it will continue to open and improve, showing its heritage with short to mid-term cellaring.
The Menzies Estate Vineyard is located in the heart of Coonawarra. The famous terra rossa soil over limestone is the holy grail of all Cabernet Sauvignon purists. Since 1987, Yalumba has become one of the winemakers fortunate enough to be a part of the inner Sanctum of Coonawarra, crafting wine from exceptional Estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Menzies Vineyard, Yalumba’s premium Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, was established in the world famous region of Coonawarra in 1975. Just 2 kilometres wide and 20 kilometres long, the Coonawarra terroir is defined by a long, narrow strip of terra rossa soil over limestone - perfect for growing full-bodied, structured Cabernet.
Excellent late winter and early spring rains replenished the soil profile. Mild weather at flowering enabled an even fruit set. The weather leading up to and including harvest was dry and exceptionally mild which resulted in grapes that retained freshness, acidity and wonderfully expressive flavours.
Food Pairing: Medium rare venison backstrap and potatoes or a roasted vegetable stack with balsamic glaze.
