Description

  • American, Hungarian & French oak
  • Red plum & cherries
  • Liquorice & chocolate
  • Soft & supple

"Deep ruby-red with depth, light on edge. The nose is gently full and has richness, dark fruit nuances melded with liquorice, cocoa, eucalyptus and spices in harmony. Full-bodied, rich on the palate, packed with ripe plums, ripe blackberries, blueberries, unfolding black pepper, mocha, liquorice, cloves. Rich flavoured spices and mocha linger with a moderate tannin grip, added texture and weight. Balance acidity provides a smooth flow. This is a Barossa Shiraz with complexities of oak and spice on a fine-grained tannin structure" Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, Sep 2021

The wine opens with fresh, bright aromas of dark red plums, cherries and brooding dark chocolate flavours from the Shiraz, entwined in the redcurrant, cedar flavours of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate is rich, fleshy and generous, yet soft and supple. Rich, balanced flavours linger throughout the finish. A wine to drink now or cellar for 5+ years.

Sourced from Barossa vineyards with vines varying in age from 10 to more than 35 years. The vines are planted in a diverse range of sites with slight variations in micro-climates and soil types, including red brown earths, sandy loams and dark clay soils. These variations contribute to the diversity of flavours in Samuel’s Collection Barossa Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

With good winter soil moisture, the vines grew happily through a warm spring and into the dry summer months. These conditions led to an even bunch set and healthy vine canopy. Through summer and into autumn, the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines held their fruit in great condition, producing grapes with intense varietal flavours.

Matured for 11 months in 19% new French and Hungarian oak hogsheads and barriques, balance in 1 to 5 year old French, American and Hungarian barrels.

With 170 years of unbroken independence, Yalumba continues to make wine at its founder’s home estate under direction of the same family today. Samuel’s Collection honours Yalumba’s founder Samuel Smith, his spirit of independence and conviction to invest in the land and make great wine.

Food Pairing: Enjoy with rosemary, pepper beef rib roast and porcini jus or crispy peanut tofu and cauliflower rice stir-fry.
