Description
Almond, Cherry, Herbal
"A varietal bouquet with aromas of cherry and plums, both fresh and preserved. As the wine opens up the scents of brown kitchen cupboard spiced and oak begin to unfold. Dry on the palate with a fine polished tannins and medium+ acid frame, baking spices and a dark clay earthy quality. There’s also a sense of fallen autumnal leaves and barrel spice combinations. Dry, balanced and well made" Cameron Douglas, aster Sommelier
"It’s complex and inviting on the nose with sweet berry, thyme, warm spice and hazelnut aromas with a hint of vanilla. The palate is equally charming, delivering supple texture and silky tannins, leading to a lingering velvety finish" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
Gorgeously styled and seductively complex, showing ripe cherry, thyme, smoked game, almond and earthy mushroom characters, leading to a beautifully rounded palate offering excellent weight and soothing mouthfeel. Splendidly framed by silky texture and polished tannins, finishing long and satisfying.
Ward Valley is situated at the southern frontier of Marlborough, making it a special place within a special place. The vineyards combination of high altitude, dry air, temperature extremes and deep clay creates a marginal climate and terroir that produces wines of rare complexity. The founders of Ward Valley, James Leary and Freddy Davison have worked tirelessly with their winemaker, to create a range of wines that truly embody the earth that it is made from and the hands that it is made by.
Sourced from our vineyard in the sub region of Ward Valley, southern Marlborough, blessed with deep clay loam soils and traces of limestone. After an excellent growing season, the parcel of grapes for this wine were selected from the Ward Valley Estate Mt Victoria Block.
Harvested on the cool night of April 6th 2020, the grapes were taken to Spring Creek and transferred to small open top fermenters for vinification. After ferment was finished, the wine was pressed to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barriques to mature.
