Floral, Oak, Spice
Deep purple and crimson hues lead to a perfumed nose of red berries and plum with cocoa and anise spice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, supple and silky in texture, with a soft plush finish.
2022 was a warm summer in Hawke’s Bay punctuated by frequent rain events, especially close to harvest. Meticulous care in the vineyards was required to ensure that fruit was harvested in good condition. This wine is a blend of Villa Maria’s Gimblett Gravels vineyards, where the free draining soils are a huge benefit in wetter vintages as the soil doesn’t retain moisture, allowing for low yields of ripe and concentrated fruit.
The fruit was picked and gently destemmed without crushing into open-top fermenters for fermentation with daily plunging to extract flavour, colour and tannin. Once pressed the wine was matured in 228L French oak barriques of which 15% were new, for 20 months prior to blending and bottling.
