Description

  • Fernch oak
  • Ripe dark berries
  • Mocha & vanilla
  • Textural tannins

"Dense, intense red with cassis/dark berry, chocolate/mocha, vanilla, cigarbox and spicy oak flavours. Approachable now with good ageing potential. A blend of cabernet franc 50%, cabernet sauvignon 46% and petit verdot 4%" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Aug 2022

"Tempting notes of ripe raspberry, roasted plum and coffee with a savoury, herbaceous edge; firm and robust with a cleansing acidity and an amazing length" Decanter World Wine Awards, 2023

The Gimblett is traditionally made from a blend of grape varieties. The Cabernet family gives structure and fresh aromatics. Merlot gives richness and mid-palate weight with Malbec helping with complexity, density and colour. The result is a wine with exotically perfumed aromatics that include ripe blackberries and red fruits plus hints of florals and dried herbs. There is superb clarity of flavours on the palate. Structurally the wine is complex, with textural tannins. This structure will allow the development of further complexity over the next 10 years. Drink 2023 to 2033.

Each variety was harvested de-stemmed and fermented separately. All parcels were either pumped over once, or hand plunged twice daily to aid optimum colour and tannin extraction. Total time on skins ranged from 19 to 22 days, which helped improve the texture of the tannins while softening and stabilising the individual wines. Each parcel was matured either in new or seasoned 225-litre French oak barriques for up to 12 months before blending in May and bottling in June. Percentage of new oak 38%.
