Description
Cherry, Mocha, Oak
"The 2023 vintage (*****) was estate-grown and hand-harvested at Parkburn, in the Cromwell Basin (85 per cent) and at Gibbston (15 per cent), and matured for 10 months in French oak casks (30 per cent new). Full, bright ruby, it is a well-structured, generous wine, already drinking well, with concentrated, ripe fruit flavours, finely integrated oak, and supple tannins. Refined, savoury and complex, it's still youthful; best drinking 2027+" Michael Cooper
"Seductively perfumed, the enticing bouquet shows dark plum, violet, olive and mushroom nuances with an elegant oak infusion. The palate offers excellent concentration and weight, wonderfully complemented by plush texture and finely pitched tannins. Wonderfully harmonious and persistent with stylish complexity. At its best: 2025 to 2036" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jul 2024
"Immediately enticing bouquet with complexity and spice, ripe red berry fruit aromas of raspberry and plums, some blackcurrant and dried herb complexities. Dry and complex on the palate with flavours, textures and a delicious mouthfeel. Judicious use of oak with some toasty spice layers, varietal and new, ripe tannins and backbone of acidity. Well made with best drinking from as early as late 2024 through 2034" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Jul 2024
"Moderately deep, ruby-red with a purple core, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegant and gentle, with aromas of black cherry, plum, mocha and fine spice. Medium-full bodied, aromas of black cherry and plum are lush, melded with mocha, black pepper and nutmeg. The fruit is ripe and packed with flavour, elevated by lively acidity. Smooth, supple tannins provide a structured framework and leading a sustained finish. A classic Central Otago Pinot Noir with juicy fruit and fine tannins" Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, Jul 2023
Expressive nose of plum, black cherry and tasty oak. Deeply fruited, rich mocha, supple and silky, with a long finish. As always, this wine shows classic Rockburn elegance, integrity and balance.
The 2023 vintage yielded beautiful Pinot Noir fruit from each of our Parkburn (85%) and Gibbston Back Road (15%) vineyards. We have then simply guided the wine gently through to the bottle with minimal handling. We believe a "hands-off" approach delivers a pure expression of Central Otago to your glass.
Clean fruit and cool nights working together to deliver a bright and floral Pinot this year, very food friendly and very ageable.
7 tonne fermenters, 1 to 4 days initial maceration; fermentation over 1 week with daily plunging followed by post fermentation maceration for another 10-14 days. 10 months in French oak; 30% new. 22% 1 year old and balance in 2/3 yr old oak.
Food Pairing: Roast meats (pork, chicken), hard cheeses, mushrooms and earthy root vegetables. Enjoy with friends over the next 10-15 years.
