"Grown on one of the world's most southerly Pinot Noir vineyard sites this tiny 7.8 hectare vineyard produces exceptional wine. Since the company was formed in 2001 Phil Handford and the winemaking team have established a world class brand. Pip Battley leads the winemaking team. This Pinot displays a floral, feminine charm, an elegant bouquet, core of fruit and incredible texture. Youthful yet fine, ripe tannins, pristine acidity and long complex finish" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier
"Hottest vintage on record has produced a fruity and accessible pinot noir with ripe cherry, plum and raspberry flavours laced with spice and supported by French oak. Soft, fruity acidity provides a welcome backbone. Lovely purity and energy. Should age well" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, The Real Review
"The 2022 Earnscleugh Vineyard Pinot Noir hails from a warmer than average year. During flowering in December, cloudier and wetter than normal weather caused temperatures to drop, and there was reduced flower germination. Bunches were more open with fewer berries. In the glass, the fruit is supple and bright, with layers of red berries, underpinned by a cherry freshness. I can easily see why these wines will all be consumed in their youth, such is the freshness and detail in the fruit; however, I would strongly recommend that you attempt to exercise some patience with these bottles, as they evolve with wonderful freshness and detail over time" Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate
"From a single vineyard in Alexandra, one of the world’s most southerly, planted in 2003. Enticing nose, layered and interesting, perfumed with red liquorice, spice, dried herbs and earth. The palate is elegant and firm with fine, silty tannins and a nice herbal (not green) savouriness to offset the core of juicy rich fruit – a hallmark of the sub-region. Supple and harmonious, with a real sense of lightness and grace. Drinking Window: 2024 – 2030" Emma Jenkins, Master of Wine, Decanter
Dark purple with garnet hues. Perfumed with violets, blackberries, strawberry, hints of spice, chocolate and dried herb. A full silky entry with dark plum, dark cherry, florals and forest floor notes. Concentrated and complex with good minerality, ample fine-grained tannins and a persistent finish. Firm acid backbone which melds well with the dark fruit profile. Single Vineyard.
Alc: 13.3%
1 x Calvert Bannockburn Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021
Awarded 96/100 Points: Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier
Awarded 96/100 Points: Emma Jenkins, Master of Wine
Awarded 94/100 Points & 4 Stars: Stephen Wong, Master of Wine, The Real Review
"Fabulous bouquet driven by ripeness, youth and vibrancy. Scents of ripe concentrated black cherry cushioned against a savoury-dried-herb quality giving this wine a sense of place. Other aromas include clove and baking spices of barrel, dried earth and black raspberry compote. Complex and youthful. On the palate a textured, concentrated and luscious wine with textures from polished tannins and backbone of acidity, the concentration of fruits absorb the barrel flavours well and all tannins begin to dissolve slowly on the palate. Excellent length and power. Best drinking from likely 2026 through 2036+ if stored well" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier
"Dark cherry, milk chocolate, star anise, dried herbs, rosehip and a touch of earth and graphite. There's plenty of fruit but this isn't a fruity wine, rather it’s savoury and complex with many layers to explore on the smooth, supple palate. Good fruit concentration and sandy tannins. A harmonious, calm wine, all nicely together but with a sense of place and character" Emma Jenkins, Master of Wine
"Perfumed wholebunch, stemmy, aromatic, quite complex. Energetic fruit with floral nuances over juicy, ripe fruit which enters red and finishes black. Good concentration and quite plush; an accessible and user-friendly style which nonetheless has density to benefit from ageing" Stephen Wong, The Real Review
A wine with great personality, borne of small things done beautifully. The 2021 Calvert Pinot Noir is dark ruby red in colour. The nose is dominated by lively savoury characters of dried thyme and cinnamon spice. This leads into a wine with silky textured smooth tannins. Dark berry fruits and robust earthy flavours lead to a smooth lengthy finish on the palate. 2021 was a great growing season. The grapes ripened well and the fruit harvested resulted in a strong concentrated structural wine. Organic grapes.
