Matchbook Old Head Dunnigan Hills Chardonnay 2023 (California)
A complete bouquet & expression of Chardonnay
A complete bouquet & expression of Chardonnay
Description
Grapefruit, Oak, Peach
The 2023 Matchbook Chardonnay displays a golden straw hue in the glass hinting at the richness within. The first sip begins with a creamy texture that envelops the palate followed by layers of mango, citrus, and pineapple that blend harmoniously with the gentle toasty barrel character. A whisper of creamy lees adds depth, leading to a finish reminiscent of lemon meringue—bright yet indulgent.
The Giguiere family has worked the rolling hills of Northern Yolo County for six generations, long before vines took root in the region. In 1981, they planted their first vineyard, pioneers in a landscape better known for wheat and sheep. By 1993, their efforts put the Dunnigan Hills on the map as a recognized appellation. Matchbook’s signature flame is a nod to the brothers’ youthful fascination with fire—controlled, of course. Their real passion, however, is in the vineyard, where regenerative farming isn’t a trend but a way of life, ensuring each bottle speaks of place and tradition.
Six different clones of Chardonnay were artfully blended to create this wine. All the grapes were picked at night and delivered to the winery before sunrise to ensure the fruit was crushed when cool. We used yeast “cocktails” (a mixture of our winemaker’s favorite compatible yeasts) on all lots to allow complex fermentation characters to evolve. The barrel fermented lots were lees stirred twice a month to enhance texture and mouthfeel. Most of the tank fermented lots were barreled down to complete aging. The Musqué clone 809 was tank fermented where it remained to hold on to all its sweet fruit characters.
Food Pairing: This is a wine where bright fruit meets elegance, making it the perfect companion for coconut shrimp and roasted poultry.
