Pale gold with green glints. Aromas of golden delicious apple, ripe pear, lemon zest, wet chalk and white flowers. The palate is bright and mineral-driven – crisp acidity meets creamy lees texture, finishing long, dry and salty. Classic Vouvray harmony.
The very first vines in the Loire Valley were planted by monks in AD400 in Vouvray. The appellation now covers 2000 hectares on the clay-limestone terroir to the east of Tours where they enjoy wonderful exposure to the sun on the plateau overlooking the Loire River. The vines are located on a rocky hillside on a substratum of tuffeau, cut through with valleys and covered with flinty 'perruche' soils and 'aubuis' (limestone clay).
This dry (Sec) Chenin Blanc is made by Caves de Vouvray, which is an incredibly forward-thinking, modern and quality-conscious co-operative. It was formed in 1953 as is a collective of 40 wine growers. Experts praise its role in producing accessible, high-quality expressions of the region which win consistent medals from the International Wine Challenge and International Wine & Spirit Competition. The grapes are picked at a high degree of ripeness and fermented at low temperatures to produce a brilliant ripe, apple-flavoured wine retaining delicious, mouthwatering acidity. Aged 6 months on lees to add richness of texture. It represents suburb value for money.
Food pairing: Perfect as an aperitif, with oysters, goat cheese, seafood risotto, or simply on a sunny afternoon.
