Decibel Single Vineyard Martinborough Pinot Noir 2022
A rollercoaster of a wine
A rollercoaster of a wine
Description
- French oak
- Cherry spice
- Christmas cake
- Supple tannins
Bright ruby in colour, this wine glows in the glass. The aromas are a heady mix of sweet fruit, cherry spice, Christmas cake, clove and wafting florals. The palate is fruit-forward with layers of spice and rich fruit; a rollercoaster of a wine with supple tannins that carve a very fine long line, drawing the palate out and reflecting the elegant vintage.
Martinborough sits in a perfect Pinot Noir pocket on the lower North Island. This vineyard sits down Lake Ferry Road, south from the main town of Martinborough. While there are the free draining, ancient river bed solids underneath, this particular block sits on a mound of clay and is somewhat unique in the region. There were two clones chosen for this wine; the 115 Dijon Clone known for brightness of fruit with structure and Clone 5, a Pommard Clone, known for mid palate weight and darkness in colour with a perfumed nose.
This wine was harvested and sorted in Martinborough before being brought straight up to the Hawke's Bay winery where it was put in tank, uncrushed, and sat on skins for 5 days for a cold soak. It was then allowed to warm up and ferment wild, reaching peak temperatures over 30 degrees celius. The wine was aged in a range of 20% new French oak. No additions were made however the wine was filtere before bottling March of 2023 and then aged in bottle for an additional 16months before its release in July 2024.
