"Largely 50yo plantings. Destemmed, open-top fermented and on skins for a meagre 10 days. 18 months in French oak (25% new). Fine and powdery tannins, reliant on what is clearly high-quality wood and a brief extraction window. It works. Black/blue fruits, a sluice of anise and clove and a whiff of violet. Warm. Generous. Yet these descriptives are at times inane and repetitive. The 2019 Estate Shiraz shows abundant fruit flavours that our 50 year old vineyards provide. The nose shows mulberry, blackberry, chocolate and plum. The palate is bright and full bodied with succulent tannins and great concentration of dark-berried fruit. A classic example from a superb vintage.

Shiraz has been Coriole’s principle variety and flagship wine since the first bottling in 1970. Coriole Shiraz is 100% Estate grown and the average vine age is 50 years old. 

The 2019 vintage at Coriole had dry weather, resulting in one of their smalles tvintages ever. Yields were down, particularly with shiraz and cabernet, but the wines show impressive depth and balance. Their Mediterranean varieties showed their potential under these conditions, with the sangiovese vines producing solid yields, great balance, flavour and acidity. Their nero d'avola, montepulciano and touriga ripened late, but once again with great balance and flavour. The chenin blanc and piquepoul held up their acidity, producing mid-weight wines with beautiful fragrance, and the fiano is showing concentration of flavour, richness and texture.

This wine is made in the traditional manner; fermented in open tanks and hand plunged, and matured in French oak hogsheads. The Estate Shiraz has impressive fruit intensity, yet is elegant and will reward further cellaring.

Food Pairing: A classic dish for a classic wine - try with a rare roast beef, with a healthy level of marbling scotch fillet stays beautifully tender and juicy. Serve laden with pepper sauce and all the usual trimmings.
