Sweetly fruited with savoury complexity
Wine Orbit
Description
Cherry, Oak, Plum
"It's sweetly fruited with savoury complexity, showing dark berry, cured meat, tapenade, and roasted nut aromas on the nose. The palate displays succulent fruit flavours with supple texture and fine-grained tannins, finishing persistent and finely dry. At its best: now to 2029" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Sep 2025
"Varietal, fruity, textured, savoury, dried herb and flavours of dark cherry and roasted raspberry, boysenberry and nettles. There’s a mix of oak and a light barrel smoke quality then tension from tannins and a backbone of acidity. Well made and still developing with best drinking from late 2026 through 2031+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Sep 2025
Medium coloured, this wine has a garnet core and a red rim. High toned floral notes, red cherries, strawberries, hints of tamarillo and a lovely background of subtle oak. Medium bodied, with firm, yet fine grained tannins and masses of sweet fruit in the mid palate, finishing. Already approachable, but we expect this wine to develop for a number of years.
‘Razorback’ is a word that evokes images of rugged peaks, and a harsh, but beautiful, landscape. Central Otago in other words! This year the wine is based on a single parcel of fruit from a Clutha vineyard, in the Cromwell Basin, with smaller components from Clyde and Alexandra vineyards. The parcels were separately cool-fermented, with daily plunging, followed by a few weeks maceration in tank before going into oak for about 10 months.
