Sweetly fruited & delightfully elegant
Wine Orbit
Description
- Oak style
- Spiced cherry
- Almond
- Lingering finish
"Sweetly fruited and delightfully elegant, the wine shows spiced cherry, floral, toasted almond and subtle spice notes on the nose, followed by a beautifully rounded palate that's juicy and bright. It's subtle and gentle with a delicately dry, lingering finish" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2020
"Intense oaky nose with minty red fruit notes. Attractive, tight, tannic palate with good primary fruit and a hint of cedar oak" Winestate Magazine, Oct 2019
The wine displays appealing aromatics of cherry and wild strawberries with underlying spice and savoury notes. Light in colour, the palate surprises with richness and mouthfeel and a complex array of red berry notes and gentle oak integration carrying the wine to a long, elegant finish.
The 2018 vintage was similar to 2017 in that a fantastic dry and warm start to the season was met with some indifferent wet weather close to harvest, requiring quick decision making to ensure fruit was picked in sound condition. The great start to the season and hot summer ensured there was still nice flavour development and by picking early, the winemakers have retained a lovely freshness and brightness in the wine.
This wine is largely comprised of 3 vineyards. Over 80% is derived from the Waihopai Valley (62% from their home Sound of White; 19% from the revered Churton vineyard). The balance is largely sourced from a vineyard in Ward, south of Seddon. Destined to age gracefully over the next 10 years.
Food Pairing: Lamb, game and mushroom based dishes.
