Te Kairanga

Founded in 1984, Te Kairanga is a cornerstone of the Martinborough wine story. Planted on land once owned by Martinborough’s founding father, John Martin, the vineyard carries the legacy of the region in its very soil. But while their roots run deep, the vision is firmly set on the future.

Te Kairanga was brought to life by Tom Draper, a passionate businessman, winemaker, and visionary who helped shape the identity of Martinborough as a world-class wine region.

Today, under the guidance of Head Winemaker John Kavanagh, Te Kairanga continue to evolve with a focus on fully realising the potential of this remarkable place. The winemaking is future-focused, innovative, and deeply expressive of Martinborough’s unique terroir, especially in their acclaimed Pinot Noirs.

Marvel nature, savour its taste.

Every bit of Martinborough shapes their wines, from the delicate, unassuming features of the environment to the gentle rhythm of the seasons. But it’s more than terroir, it’s the quiet character of a region, captured in every bottle. It is this that makes Te Kairanga wines rich in nature, abundant in taste.

At Te Kairanga, history is just the beginning. The real story is in every bottle we share with those who appreciate where they’ve come from, and where they’re going.

John Martin & Runholder

Under the guidance of Head Winemaker John Kavanagh, Te Kairanga continue to evolve with a focus on fully realising the potential of their remarkable place. Their winemaking is future-focused, innovative, and deeply expressive of Martinborough’s unique terroir, especially in their acclaimed Pinot Noirs.

The John Martin and Runholder wines have been crafted as a nod to Martinborough’s namesake, John Martin, whose original landholdings now bear our vines. This land was once farmed with sheep by John Martin, earning him the name of ‘Runholder’.

These wines are a showcased of the best vineyard parcels and some of the oldest vines in the region.
