"Dark, deep ruby-red with a purple hue, lighter on edge. The nose is controlled with beautiful aromas of violet, boysenberries and plums, melded with Provencal herbs fragrant and a layer of stony mineral. The palate is robust and fresh; lively acidity carries gentle ripened fruit notes of boysenberries and plums, entwined with herbs and meaty complexity. Medium-full bodied, there is a structure of smooth and hearty tannin, along with alcohol power and aromatic peppercorns. A satisfying mouthfeel with the right amount of complexity and freshness to keep going back for another sip. This is an attractive Hawkes Bay Syrah, offers excellent value; elegant tannin structure, carries aromas of boysenberry, plum fruit, melded with an amalgam of violet, herbs, meatiness and stony mineral complexity, and a lift of peppercorns. Served with grilled lamb and hearty stews over the next 5 years" Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, Apr 2021
"It’s delightfully fruited and perfumed on the nose showing dark and purple fruit characters with nuances of floral, clove, almond and game. The palate displays excellent weight and plump mouthfeel, wonderfully complemented by silky texture and refined tannins, making it immediately appealing and highly enjoyable" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jun 2020
"Peppery, toasty, smoky, dark fruited and meaty bouquet. On the palate - fresh and fruity with flavours of blue berries and plums, raspberry, black pepper and freshly smoked meats. Firm tannins, plenty of acidity and a lengthy youthful impact throughout the palate. Balanced and well made, young, but approachable now, an ideal food wine for late Autumn and Winter 2020. Best drinking on its own from late 2020 through 2023+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Jun 2020
"Ripe, flavoursome and quite dense syrah with juicy blackberry, blackcurrant and plum flavours supported by tangy acidity. Lively, fresh, high-energy wine that packs a lot of punch for the price" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, May 2020
Intense blackberry, wild raspberries, red liquorice and hints of pepper aromas combine to produce a fruit dominant complex wine with a subtle touch of oak spice on the finish. The wine is deliberately released at a youthful age to maximize the beautiful perfume and fruit freshness.
100% Syrah grown in Gimblett Gravels, Hawke's Bay.
2019 was a very warm early season in Hawkes Bay, with a very warm, humid late summer and autumn producing delicious, exuberant, early drinking Syrah.
Each individual vineyard parcel was harvested separately with the majority of batches then de-stemmed prior to fermentation. Gentle daily pumping over of the skins during fermentation helped extract a soft, complex structure. The skin maceration was extended for up to three weeks following fermentation to further integrate and soften the tannins. Following eight months aging in stainless steel tanks and a short time in seasoned French oak, the individual blocks were blended to create the ideal marriage of components.
Food Pairing: This wine can happily be enjoyed by the glass or alternatively with a wide range of food, particularly red meat dishes, game or pasta.
