The Quinta was his passion, a passion shared by his children, and it became his descendants' lifelong devotion as well. The last forty years have brought immense joy, but like any great passion, entailed great sacrifices. In 1994 - a few years after a change was made to Portuguese law, allowing Quintas to export wines in their own right for the first time since the 1930s – the Quinta do Crasto began to bottle and sell our Douro wines. Soon afterward, with the launch of the 1978 Crasto Vintage Port, we began marketing Port wines from the Quinta’s old stocks. Around the same time, father and current CEO Jorge began sharing this passion with his three children - Miguel, Tomás and Rita - whose hard work and energetic commitment have helped the Quinta do Crasto earn its eminent position not only in the Portuguese marketplace, but on the global wine map as well.

"It’s wonderfully fruited and immensely complex on the nose showing dark fruit richness with toasted spice, vanilla, charcuterie and cedary oak characters. The alcoholic fermentation takes place at controlled temperature for 7 days. In temperature-controlled stainless steel vats.

After 2017 and 2018 yields significantly below the decade average, 2019 proved to be much more generous and more in line with what they are used to at Quinta do Crasto. However, it was still a challenging year, with a dry winter and spring depleting the vines' necessary soil water reserves. They found, however, that in the months of June, July and August, the vines had well-balanced and healthy canopies , without great signs of water stress. They attributed this balance to the mild temperatures from May to late August — 5ºC lower than the previous 5-year average at Quinta do Crasto. This contributed positively to a slow and well-balanced ripening of the grapes during July and August. Exceptional levels of ripeness resulted. The 2019 harvest took place very calmly, with cold nights and hot, dry days that enabled picking at the ideal moment. The rain on 21 and 22 September was essential, as it helped to refine the ripening of later varieties, namely Touriga Franca. The 2019 harvest began with the first white grapes from Quinta do Crasto arriving to the winery on 26 August and finished on 11 October when the berries from the highest altitude vineyards came in. On balance, 2019 yielded highly expressive white wines, with excellent concentration and extraordinary freshness. Our red wines also reflect the equilibrium enjoyed during the vegetative cycle. The first DUNE wines were released in 2016 and the range has expanded to include a variety of blends and single varietal wines that are driven by a fresh, aromatic style that this vineyard delivers. They farm organically (although not yet officially certified) and ferment simply. They don't fine their wines, sulphur is added in minimal amounts (although some wines receive none) and the wines receive a gentle filter prior to bottling. However, the approach is not one of minimal intervention – some of their varieties are co-fermented, others are not, the blending process is strategic and considered. Wines are driven by a vision of style, with each wine produced according to its style outcome and based on the individual qualities of the vineyard. This may involve different pruning techniques, green harvest or bunch thinning, differing dates for harvest, differing treatment of grapes pre-ferment, and then in the winery.

Ruby red colour. The spring will be remembered as one of the wettest in history, with three times the seasonal average rainfall and high temperatures in April. Despite late budbreak, the weather conditions and rapid growth of the shoots enabled the vines to catch up and bloom a week earlier than anticipated. For the entire month of May and – to a lesser extent – June, rainfall remained above average and it was only in July that we received some respite, with a warm and dry month. Veraison took place between the 22nd and 25th of July, and August was as hot as it had been the previous year, but slightly wetter. The sugars and acidity developed slowly, while the berries grew to larger dimensions thanks to the high level of water present in the soil. September was warm and dry. Temperatures were higher than the seasonal average, but cooler nights enabled the vines to recover and preserve the aromas and acidity. The red grape harvest began on the 31st of August with the Merlot and ended on the 8th of October with the later-ripening varieties.

The clusters were hand-picked into 15 kg crates and then selected by hand on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, and finally softly crushed. In 2016, optical sorting has been introduced in addition to manual selection, in order to further increase the quality of selection. Each grape variety and single vineyard block were vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel and concrete tanks at temperatures between 26 and 30°C for one week, followed by maceration for about 15 days, for a total time in the vat of about three weeks. The malolactic fermentation took place mainly in oak barrels, 70% new and 30% once used. The wine then remained in barriques, in Ornellaia’s temperature-controlled cellars for about 18 months. This was the warmest winter since 2005, accompanied however, with high rainfall, especially in December, both at Quinta da Cabreira (Douro Superior) and Quinta do Crasto (Cima Corgo). March to June were also hot and rainy, leading to an early budburst, which occurred about ten days earlier than usual. This weather was particularly worrisome as it represented a risk of potential vine disease and required rigorous monitoring by the viticulture team to avoid potential infection. July and August were hot, but soil water was fortunately suicient to ensure correct grape ripening. However, it was essential not to miss the optimal harvest time, so as to prevent grape dehydration. The harvest started on 17 August and ended on 25 September.

 French oak

 Berry fruit

 Plush spices

 Fine long tannins

Berry/leafy aromas are to the fore, due to the wine being almost two thirds Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are subsequently pressed gently and this is followed by a skin maceration at low temperature for 8-10 days. Peculiarity of this product is the following “ripasso” of the wine on the Amarone skins in February. This second maceration favours the extraction of tannins, which give this wine its longevity, and of the typical fragrance of Amarone wine. After the malolactic fermentation, maturation takes place for between 18-24 month in medium and large size oak casks.
