But most importantly, it means great tasting wines which don’t cost the earth.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\r\n\tThe growing season in Marlborough started out warm and dry, resulting in very even flowering and ultimately balanced vines with the right amount of crop to get them through to harvest. The warm weather continued through Spring and Summer, with periodic rains which kept the vines hydrated through the warm growing season. The warmer conditions meant that harvest started around two weeks earlier than the previous year, with fruit that was full of flavour, naturally balanced acidity and lovely weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\r\n\tIndividual parcels of Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer, were selected and harvested separately. The fruit was then crushed, de-stemmed and gently pressed off to settle in separate stainless steel tanks. These tanks were settled for 72hrs and then the clear juice was racked off to another tank for a long, cool fermentation to enhance and capture the pure fruit flavours. Once fermentation was completed, the wine was racked, blended, stabilised and filtered before bottling.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\r\n\tThe Seaview Vineyard in the Awatere Valley is exposed to some of the toughest growing conditions in Marlborough; high sunshine and wind, cool nights and low rainfall which produces a smaller, thicker skinned berry with intense fruit flavours. The cool site regularly commences harvest up to one week later than other sub regions. All three of these aromatic varieties sit on sheltered, north facing slopes. Hand picked on the 25th of March (Gewurztraminer) and the 4th of April (Pinot Gris).\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\r\n\tHandpicked Gewurztraminer fruit was destemmed directly into puncheons for cold maceration until the harvest of the Pinot Gris fruit 10 days later. Upon receival of the Pinot Gris, 2\/3 of each varietal were combined in puncheons for further maceration and natural co-ferment on skins. The balance of each varietal was naturally fermented on skins individually until dryness after approximately two weeks before being pressed into a combination of old puncheons and stainless steel tanks. A small portion of colourless Pinot Noir juice was drained from a 100% whole bunch Carbonic Maceration tank and fermented in an old Barrique before being blended with the Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris components. While the red varieties from this region are now very established, the whites remain marginal and less known. Growing Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne and also blending them together can be considered the white counterpoint to blends made from Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro. Leading into the harvest period the region endured some significant rainfall events, which increased berry and bunch size, but also disease pressure, unfortunately. Luckily we had an excellent team working tirelessly in the vineyard to mitigate this and also crop thin throughout the whole vineyard, with an extra focus on the Pinot Noir. We started picking Pinot Noir on 16th March and finished picking with a botrytis style Riesling on 19th May. It must be said, after the early and fast and furious nature of the previous vintages, a vintage that was a touch later and spread out between each variety was really welcomed. The season was not easy, and certainly wet in the months leading up to harvest; so to see the cleanliness of the fruit was very encouraging.
