On average, March was colder than January and brought snow again. In April, however, summer began almost seamlessly. The warm weather and sufficient water provided a fast and relatively early budding. Thanks to the warm weather there was a very early flowering. Fortunately, this vineyard was spared from storms with heavy rain and hail. Due to the persistent dryness, the lack of water was the dominant topic for a long time. Due to the continuing warmth and dryness, noble rotten grapes were harvested with must weights up to 270°. The aroma of the grapes as well as the moderate acidity let the winemaker's expect full-bodied, fruity and harmonious Moselle wines.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\r\n\tAfter almost 250 years, and for eight generations, viticulture has run in the Kerpen family. Riesling is grown exclusively on around 8 hectares made up of several named vineyards: Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, Bernkasteler Bratenhöfchen and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The interplay of Moselle slate, south-southwest aspect, minerality and climate is unique. The result is wines with a fine play between fruit and acidity, a low alcohol content and a long life. After carefully selecting the grapes by hand, they are gently pressed. Due to the mild winter, the physiological development of the plants was about 2 to 3 weeks ahead of the long-term average. The subsequent drought in spring and summer helped the grapes to blossom quickly and well. However, the heat that followed and the lack of rain from June onwards kept the winegrowers on their toes. The drought was interrupted by local storms that ravaged the vineyards, sometimes violently, with heavy rain and hail. In Wehlen and the surrounding area, however, they were largely spared. Until shortly before the harvest, the grapes looked splendid. With the beginning of the harvest, the long-awaited rain set in. The abundant rainfall forced them to harvest very quickly. The grapes were harvested fully ripe, with an average must weight of 84°Oe in the late harvest range.  The 2019 wine is balanced, very full-bodied, and has a great fruit-acid play. But in spring, particularly in April and May the dry weather returned. During blooming-season in the beginning of June the weather took another turn and became quite wet and cool. By the end of June local thunderstorms brought plenty of downpour up to almost torrential rainfalls. July was very dry again and a heatwave in early August meant more stressful conditions for the vines. We started harvesting as early as September 14th in order to ensure picking healthy and ripe grapes with plenty of acidity. The decision was proven to be correct as continually high temperatures made the acidity levels dwindle further. Harvest was periodically interrupted by periods of rain. But in spring, particularly in April and May the dry weather returned. During blooming-season in the beginning of June the weather took another turn and became quite wet and cool. By the end of June local thunderstorms brought plenty of downpour up to almost torrential rainfalls. July was very dry again and a heatwave in early August meant more stressful conditions for the vines. We started harvesting as early as September 14th in order to ensure picking healthy and ripe grapes with plenty of acidity. The decision was proven to be correct as continually high temperatures made the acidity levels dwindle further. Harvest was periodically interrupted by periods of rain.
