Placing the winery in a 1,000-year family trust, meant it was imperative from the start that the company foundation was correct. The Peabody family gathered a team of great minds to build a wine company that could move, adjust and evolve from generation to generation. Not a small task but great things seldom are. From the start, chardonnay has been a winery darling. For winemaker Julian Grounds, it is the varietal that offers the “greatest opportunity to reflect both place and philosophy.” ‘Place’ for Craggy Range means the Gimblett Gravels, as the land continues to prove herself, and the winemaking philosophy has stayed true. The 2018 season was tailor made for premium chardonnay from Hawke’s Bay, with classic warm days and cool nights yielding grapes with ripe flavours, generous acidity and structure; everything vignerons love about producing wines in a cool climate. As Craggy Range nears its third decade, chardonnay will continue to be an important wine in their portfolio, and she will no doubt become and remain a darling in many hearts. The region enjoys dry summers with moderate, cool nights. This wine reflects a single vineyard Malbec dominant blend 80% with 20% Merlot which was grown organically on the famous Gimblett Gravels appellation. The Gimblett Gravels is marked by specific soils laid bare from the constantly shifting Ngaruroro River over millions of years. The river’s last shift in 1867 left these amazing rocky soils, which combined with the slightly inland Heretaunga Plains’ weather, and classic viticulture techniques created a uniquely expressive Malbec

This certified organic site can ripen quite late compared to other site on the Gimblett Gravels, resulting in dense, darker fruit. Hand-picked in late April and transported in whole bunches from the vineyard to the close-by winery in small baskets. The fruit was then destemmed and only lightly crushed to allow the skins to slowly breakdown during the fermentation. Some of the fermenters were a co-ferment of Malbec/Merlot. The fruit was then cold macerated for 5 days on skins before slowly warming each of the small fermenters and allowing a wild fermentation to kick in. Fermentation lasted 17 days before the wine was then macerated on skinsagain for an additional 19 days. This is an impressive wine with dark aromas of blackberries, blackcurrant leaf and cedar, underpinned by fresh rosemary and almond notes. Dry, full bodied and intensely fruity in flavour; this is a great Cabernet Sauvignon from grapes grown on a block of land behind Roy’s Hill, which was initially earmarked to be the site of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Correctional Facility, hence the name Prison Block. Today this land is home to the unforgiving Cabernet Sauvignon grape clone 337, which needs intense heat to ripen and a lengthy summer. The impressive depth of flavour and layers of complexity in this wine with its ripe dark fruit and high but balanced acidity all suggest that this is a wine for the long haul. Ten to 15 years in a good cellar will see it continue to evolve and open up with increasing depth of flavour. The fruit for this wine was harvested on 9th April 2021 in immaculate condition and balance.

Four parcels from carefully chosen rows were vinified separately. After a three day cold soak to extract important colour and flavour components, the musts were fermented with selected yeasts in open-top stainless steel vats. With diligent cap management, the resulting wine parcels were pressed off the skins, creating three blends, and then aged for twelve months in quality French oak, of which 25% was new wood. The three parcels were then brought together on 4th June 2022. The final wine underwent a light egg white fining and filtered just before bottling under Stelvin screwcap closure on 11th August 2022.

Food Pairing: To be enjoyed on its own or try with roasted duck leg and plum sauce.
