The estate’s grapes are category A – the very best the Douro has to offer. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group's lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). There is very fine concentration of flavor for a 10 year old Tawny. If I had a quibble, the alcohol shows at times, especially early on and rather notably when drunk a little too warm. Made only in the very finest years – known as ‘declared’ vintages – Vintage Ports are blended from the best produce of the firm’s own estates of Quinta de Vargellas, Quinta de Terra Feita and more recently, Quinta do Junco. After each harvest, the tasting panel selects the finest Port wines from the three properties and these are then left to age for two winters in oak vats. In their second Spring, they are tasted again. If they are judged to be of exceptional quality, the Port wines of the three estates are blended together, Vargellas bringing structure, elegance and complexity to the wine and Terra Feita and Junco body, depth and powerful, concentrated fruit. At this stage it must be decided whether a Vintage Port is to be ‘declared’. For a declaration to be made, the Vintage Port blend must be of outstanding quality: austere in its youth, with tremendous depth of flavour and massive structure, capable of evolving over years, or decades into that quintessence of great Port, a mature Taylor’s Vintage. Historically Taylor’s has only declared about three Vintage years per decade. Taylor’s Vintage Ports are renowned for their massive structure and aromatic power, tempered by a characteristic understatement and restraint. The ultimate collector’s Port wines, Vintage Ports will age for decades in the cellar, slowly developing the elegance and harmony which are the hallmarks of a mature Taylor’s Vintage Port.

Food Pairing: Vintage Ports are after meal drinks. The Quinta was his passion, a passion shared by his children, and it became his descendants' lifelong devotion as well. The last forty years have brought immense joy, but like any great passion, entailed great sacrifices. In 1994 - a few years after a change was made to Portuguese law, allowing Quintas to export wines in their own right for the first time since the 1930s – the Quinta do Crasto began to bottle and sell our Douro wines. Soon afterward, with the launch of the 1978 Crasto Vintage Port, we began marketing Port wines from the Quinta’s old stocks. Around the same time, father and current CEO Jorge began sharing this passion with his three children - Miguel, Tomás and Rita - whose hard work and energetic commitment have helped the Quinta do Crasto earn its eminent position not only in the Portuguese marketplace, but on the global wine map as well.

 Red fruit

 Floral hints

 Smooth tannins

 Fresh & balanced

Vivid purple in colour. However, it was still a challenging year, with a dry winter and spring depleting the vines' necessary soil water reserves. They found, however, that in the months of June, July and August, the vines had well-balanced and healthy canopies , without great signs of water stress. They attributed this balance to the mild temperatures from May to late August — 5ºC lower than the previous 5-year average at Quinta do Crasto. This contributed positively to a slow and well-balanced ripening of the grapes during July and August. Exceptional levels of ripeness resulted. The 2019 harvest took place very calmly, with cold nights and hot, dry days that enabled picking at the ideal moment. The rain on 21 and 22 September was essential, as it helped to refine the ripening of later varieties, namely Touriga Franca. The 2019 harvest began with the first white grapes from Quinta do Crasto arriving to the winery on 26 August and finished on 11 October when the berries from the highest altitude vineyards came in. On balance, 2019 yielded highly expressive white wines, with excellent concentration and extraordinary freshness. Our red wines also reflect the equilibrium enjoyed during the vegetative cycle. They are highly complete wines, with vibrant aromas, excellent concentration, solid structure and, above all, they are well-balanced with excellent ageing potential.

 Black plum

 Damson notes

 Eucalyptus & pine needle

 Peppery tannins

Deep, ruby-crimson colour. Soil water reserves were amply replenished, a good position to be in for the vines’ growing and ripening cycles. The wet, cool spring and generally unsettled atmospheric conditions continued into the summer and resulted in a diminishing of the crop size. Inevitably, the growth cycle of the vine was delayed by a few weeks, but a hot and dry August put maturations back on track. This was the warmest winter since 2005, accompanied however, with high rainfall, especially in December, both at Quinta da Cabreira (Douro Superior) and Quinta do Crasto (Cima Corgo). March to June were also hot and rainy, leading to an early budburst, which occurred about ten days earlier than usual. This weather was particularly worrisome as it represented a risk of potential vine disease and required rigorous monitoring by the viticulture team to avoid potential infection. July and August were hot, but soil water was fortunately suicient to ensure correct grape ripening. However, it was essential not to miss the optimal harvest time, so as to prevent grape dehydration. The harvest started on 17 August and ended on 25 September. Peter and Charles Symington, Graham’s father and son winemaking team, chose the finest wines of the vintage, part of which they selected for bottling as Vintage Port, whilst a further selection of the finest lots were earmarked for long-term ageing in seasoned oak casks for future release as Colheita Port; wines from a single harvest (‘colheita’ means harvest in Portuguese). When Peter retired in 2009, Charles succeeded him as head winemaker and taster and having closely followed the wines’ development he decided to further mature the 2003 wines in wood prior to bottling. The Graham’s 2003 Colheita release has been named ‘First Flight’ in celebration of the first century of aviation.

2003 is remembered throughout Europe as having had one of the hottest summers on record with temperatures of 45°C+ in many parts of the continent, which caused problems with over-ripeness in many winegrowing areas. Such high seasonal temperatures are not unusual in the Douro, and the vines did not suffer undue hydric stress, largely because of the good ground water reserves which the wet winter provided. Yields were low (averaging just 0.9 Kg/vine at the Malvedos vineyard) but the quality was remarkable; the Touriga Franca variety — one of the most reliable barometers of a good year — was beautifully ripe and made an important contribution to the lots destined for ageing as Graham’s 2003 Colheita Port. In his harvest logbook, Charles Symington made the following entry, dated October 3rd, 2003: “It is rare to have such good weather and the grapes in such fine condition. Baumés were not too high and acidity levels were normal, both clear proof that we had not had excessive heat. Yields were very low as is the norm for the Douro.”

Founded in 1820 by William and John Graham in Portugal’s Douro Valley, for nearly two centuries Graham’s has cultivated its reputation as one of the greatest names in Port. The quality of Graham’s Port relies on the finest grapes, primarily sourced from five iconic quintas in the Douro Valley: Quinta dos Malvedos, Quinta do Tua, Quinta das Lages and two others, Quinta da Vila Velha and Quinta do Vale de Malhadas, which are privately owned by members of the Symington family.

Food Pairing: Graham’s 2003 First Flight Colheita Port is an excellent accompaniment to dark chocolate, caramel or vanilla based desserts, and can also be enjoyed alone, as a dessert in its own right. Mild temperatures from budburst to veraison meant that the vines underwent very little stress, hastening the growth cycle by approximately 15 days relative to the five-year average. The harvest began in the last week of August with hot, dry days and cold nights.
