Elevated slightly above the surrounding plains, the vineyard is exposed to cooling afternoon sea breezes which help to retain fragrance and fresh acidity, ideal for Chardonnay. The topsoil is a dense clay over a calcareous clay pan that has resulted from limestone outwash from the Tuki Tuki valley. The capillary action in the clay soil holds on to water tightly in the drier summer months, making it hard for the vine to access, while the clay pan restricts root growth. Therefore, vine vigour is generally well controlled, and crops are naturally very modest. The limestone influence brings a mineral element to the wines that we do not see to the same degree from other sites. Terraces Vineyard (27%): On the western bank of the river, sheltered to the south by Te Mata Peak and to the west by a higher river terrace, but still affected by the sea breeze, this is a slightly warmer site with a similar soil type. The wines are richer and rounder with a greater emphasis on stonefruit flavours. Omarunui Vineyard (6%): The only vineyard from outside of the Tuki Tuki valley, on the southern bank, of the Tutaikuri river, roughly 10 minutes south of Church Road. A sheltered, more inland site, it produces subtle stone fruit flavoured wines with gentle texture. The soils here are known as red metals, formed by a 10,000 year old, free draining, alluvial greywacke gravel riverbed since covered by a shallow layer of wind-blown loess and iron rich volcanic ash that is responsible for the distinctive rust coloured staining of the stones. This site typically produces ripe, supple and very aromatic wine with an amalgam of red and black fruit and lifted floral fragrance. Wai-iti Vineyard (18%): Slightly south of Redstone and also located in the Bridge Pa Triangle, this vineyard is more exposed and therefore later ripening. It produces slightly more elegant wines, bring fragrance and freshness to the blend.The Gimblett Vineyard (26%): An area of very free draining alluvial gravels, this soil type is some of the lowest vigour, lowest nutrient soil in Hawkes Bay, restricting vine growth and water uptake and resulting in meagre crops of intensely flavoured fruit. The area is only 30m above sea level, and far enough inland to be relatively well protected from the sea breeze, the vineyard is also sheltered from the cold southerly by Roys Hill, making this one of the warmest areas in Hawke’s Bay ideally suited to red winegrowing. This vineyard tends to produce wines with a core of dark fruit and a firm tannin structure that brings length and drive to the blend.

The fruit was selectively harvested across an automated sorting table to remove any green material before being crushed to fermenters. Fermentation was allowed to peak at 34 deg C ensuring good extraction of colour and ripe tannin. The wines were allowed to undergo post fermentation maceration for a total time on skins of between three and four weeks. This maceration period brings greater richness and texture to the palate and helps to integrate and balance the tannins in the wines. This is further aided by regular aeration, which also stabilises colour and opens up fruit aromatics, downplaying leafier herbal notes and allowing the aromatic floral and spice aromas to shine.

We taste daily to determine the amount of aeration and to determine the optimum time to drain and press. The wine was then filled to French oak barriques (27% new) to complete malolactic fermentation and subsequent maturation for 17 months, with the first six months barrel maturation on lees to help further build palate texture. Already drinking exceptionally well, with careful cellaring we expect this wine to continue to mature gracefully for 5 years or more from vintage date.

Tuki Tuki Vineyard (67%): Planted by Tom McDonald in the 1960’s and is situated roughly 4km from the mouth of the Tuki Tuki river on the eastern bank, on a gentle slope running down towards the river. Bringing more of a white flesh peach note to the blend.

Hand-harvested and hand sorted, the fruit was gently whole bunch pressed directly to French oak barriques without any clarification or additions. The area is only 30 M above sea level, and far enough inland to be relatively well protected from the sea breeze, while the gravel soils store the heat of the day, helping to make this one of the warmest areas in the region ideally suited to red winegrowing. This vineyard tends to produce wines with a core of dark fruit and a firm tannin structure that brings length and drive to the blend. Redstone Vineyard (20%): Situated on the warm soils of the renowned Bridge Pa Triangle Winegrowing District, this vineyard is only a three-minute drive from the Gimblett Vineyards but produces a distinctively different wine. The soils here are known as red metals, a 10,000-year-old, free draining, alluvial greywacke gravel riverbed since covered by a shallow layer of windblown loess, including iron rich volcanic ash that has rust stained the soils. It typically produces ripe, supple and aromatic wines, with good mid-palate flesh, that helps to balance the more structural Gimblett Vineyard wines.

2021 was another exceptional year in Hawke’s Bay, with warm, dry, settled weather over most of the season. A significant sustained drought period lasted from mid-summer through until well after harvest was completed, allowing for all fruit to be harvested in optimum condition. A little cooler than 2020, the vintage is characterised by exuberant aromatics and excellent structure, which should see some very long-lived wines. The vines were trained to 2 cane VSP and we employed extensive shoot and fruit thinning, along with bunch positioning, de-clumping, close canopy trimming and 100% removal of leaf through the fruit zone, to ensure a balanced, evenly spaced and well exposed crop. Soil moisture was monitored regularly to regulate a deficit drip irrigation programme. This kept thevines in a functioning yet low vigour state that promoted both ripening and concentration. Approaching harvest time, we visited the blocks every 2 or 3 days, tasting, evaluating flavour and ripeness and checking for condition to ensure we picked at the ideal moment; our aim was to achieve a balance between density, power, freshness and precision in the resulting wines.

A complex array of dense plum and berry fruits with more lifted notes of fragrant spice, sandalwood, cedar, dried lavender and violet like floral aromas are complimented by savoury, earthy and dark chocolate undertones derived from barrel maturation and an approach to winemaking that emphasises complexity over simple fruit.

Bringing more of a white flesh peach note to the blend.

Hand-harvested and hand sorted, the fruit was gently whole bunch pressed directly to French oak barriques without any clarification or additions. Wild primary and malolactic fermentation ensued, and has delivered an extra degree of complexity, textural interest and provided an excellent natural acid balance. 33% new oak was used to aid to further enhance the depth of the wine without dominating the fruit. The wine was matured on full yeast lees in barrel approximately 11 months with only occasional yeast lees stirring. To avoid any unnecessary stripping effect, the wine was unfined and only lightly filtered for clarity prior to bottling.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0686/9211/5773/files/ChurchRoadGrandReserveHawke_sBayChardonnayNV.jpg?v=1750040112
church-road-grand-reserve-hawkes-bay-syrah-2022
Church Road Grand Reserve Hawke's Bay Syrah 2022

The 2022 vintage is praised for its "powerful palate structure" that rewards cellaring.

A core of dark plum and berry fruit is overlaid with classic Hawke's Bay Syrah perfume of violets, exotic warm spice and cracked black pepper, supported by subtle oak toast.
