Description

"Giesen Small Batch Chardonnay 2015 Hawkes Bay: Bold, rich, toasty and complex bouquet. Aromas include a flinty, wood spice and whole bunch-like flinty mineral suggestions. Spicy pear, white peach and apple. Dry, textured and packed with flavour. Quince, apple and citrus peel, a nutty cashew woody layer. The combination of fruit, wood and textures with a fine acid line, medium+ weight and developing complexity show off a well-made wine reflecting both origins of fruit, soil, and attention to detail winemaking. Drink now and through 2026." Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier

"This is a delicious Chardonnay filled with golden peach, rockmelon and citrus characters with nuances of cedar and brioche. The palate is concentrated and fleshy, delivering excellent fruit weight and intensity, wonderfully complemented by silky texture and elegant oak infusion. Stylish and instantly appealing. At its best: now to 2019" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Mar 2018

"Full, light golden yellow colour, paler on the rim. The nose is softly full with fresh aromas of citrus fruit and yellow stonefruits overlaid by spicy oak, unfolding subtle nutty and creamy barrel-ferment elements and some chalky mineral nuances. Medium bodied, the palate is elegant and penetrating with intense citrus and stonefruit flavours along with bold, nutty and spicy oak. This is fine in proportion and the mouthfeel features a refined textural line, enlivened by crisp and refreshing acidity. This has vitality, energy and tension, and the wine carries to a lingering finish with plenty of spicy and toasty oak. This is an elegantly proportioned, citrussy Chardonnay, overlaid by spicy oak, with fine textures and brisk, refreshing acidity. Serve with grilled and roasted seafood and poultry dishes over the next 3+ years. Chardonnay fruit predominantly from Puketapu, fully barrel-fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in approx. 35% new oak with minimal lees work, avoiding MLF. Batch No. 5CHHB" Raymond Chan, Oct 2016

The small batch collection wines are crafted from small parcels of fruit that capture the attention of Giesen's winemakers. These parcels are individually tended to in the winery to ensure they truly represent the vineyard. The 2015 small batch Hawke's Bay Chardonnay has an inviting aroma of ripe stonefruit and toasty brioche, which greet you and lead into a rich full palate with toasty buttery finish. Ripe stone fruit, rich warm brioche and enticing creamy sweet nougat aromas. Peach and nectarine along with complex gently toasted cashew

characters from subtle French oak. A silky, generous palate with layers of fruit, oak spice and balanced acidity.

The 2015 season started drier than usual with typically good temperatures from December through to February. Around 16th to 18th March the edge of a tropical cyclone made it’s presence felt and about 50mm of rain fell in Hawke’s Bay. Immediately after the rain, some very cool southerly winds dried the vineyards out perfectly. The next three weeks saw almost no rain and ripening continued well. Cool dry weather followed right up until the end of harvest on
the 24th April. Harvest began with Chardonnay around mid-March and the fruit benefited greatly from another 2 weeks on the vine.

Hand selected grapes were pressed and the juice was settled for 12 hours before transfer to French Oak barrels for fermentation. A selection of yeast strains were used to both capture and enhance the multitude of aromas and flavours within the fruit. To help develop a creamy texture, the chardonnay was left on lees in barrel for nine months. After a barrel selection tasting, the Small Batch Chardonnay blend was finalised, filtered and bottled with minimal handling.

First taste, bought the comment of "thats lovely" from the Chardy drinker in the house. A really tasty drop at a great price. Matches their Pinot Gris for price & quality.

J
Excellent label... really palatable wine. Pity it went up a dollar per bottle + delivery between buying and checking to re-order.

Julia - 28/05/2018

D
A bit disappointing after the rave reviews. Hopefully just bottle variation. A hint of 'wet dog' detracted from the overall taste.

Dave - 10/12/2018

A
Nice minerally, slightly flinty, European tasting Chardonnay. Have given some away to people who think they don't like Chardonnay! Will now have to buy more...

Alison - 11/11/2018

T
Wife a Chardy drinker says ok but not as nice as Mortons & W5

Tony - 29/10/2018

A pleasant drop of wine at a reasonable price.

Catherine - 13/08/2018

Ok, oak influenced- probably a bit teabagging.

Tyas - 03/08/2018

Not yet tasted. But the site demands a rate! So given a 3. Please disregard

Rex - 18/07/2018

I purchased this with much anticipation. When I tasted it I was a little disappointed.

Bob - 19/06/2018

B
Quite austere to start but it finishes very well.

Brent - 05/05/2018

D
Very drinkable. Doesn't finish quite as lemony as I prefer, but an enjoyable drop all the same.

Dennis - 16/04/2018

I liked this wine good for quaffing
