Description

  • Ripe, dark fruits
  • Toasty wood
  • Smokey game
  • French oak

"Ripe, fleshy, fruit core with suggestions of sweet dark cherry, plum and berries of the forest. Plenty of oak scents with brown spices and mild toasty wood. Dry, firm, youthful and ripe with flavours of red berries and plum, firm structure with dusty tannins and plenty of acidity, dark wood spices, some vanilla and clove. Youthful and cellar time needed. Best from 2020 through 2028+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, 2015

"It is beautifully fragrant on the nose showing attractive sweet berry notes together with dark mushroom, smoked game, cedar and spice characters. The palate is wonderfully weighted, displaying excellent depth, superbly complemented by fine texture and polished tannins. Well structured and complex with engaging flavours" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

This Mystery Pinot Noir is a medium purple with violet highlights in the glass. Fragrant florals, spice, red cherry and a hint of oak char can be found on the nose whilst the palate has a sweet fruit entry with red and black cherry, plum spice and tobacco. Nicely structured with fine grain tannins, bright acidity and good concentration. The finish is very long.

This Mystery Pinot sees a blend of the following Pinot Noir clones: 10/5 (19%), Dijon (29%), Pommard (21%), 667/77 (31%) from this Mystery winery's westerly facing vineyard, where the soils are free draining sandy gravel and lime. This area of the vineyard misses the early morning sun but bakes in the late sun.

Post harvest grapes were destemmed into a stainless steel tank to undergo a period of cold soak. A wild ferment was used with no added yeasts. Then the wine was aged in French Oak barriques (8% was new oak) for around 9 months. No fining agent was used in the winemaking process.

Good balance of fruit and spice. Better than your average Pinot, good value. Hasn’t lasted long in our home. We have all enjoyed this mystery Pinot.

Certainly paid a lot more for a lot worse. Dark fruit, Smooth, and mallow. Soo good - I bought another dozen!

W
Great Pinot, more robust and rounded than most Central Otago Pinots, fantastic value, drinking wonderfully with some bottle age.

D
Medium translucent purple colour, shy nose, subtle dark cherry and savoury palette. Spicy finish with a lick of acid that is quite long. Best with food. Not what I expected from an Otago pinot and not really the style I prefer but nice enough, and interesting.
