Description

"Delightfully charming and wonderfully expressed, the inviting bouquet shows dark plum, spiced cherry, smoked game and floral characters with a touch of pepper spice. The palate delivers excellent concentration and roundness, wonderfully complemented by velvety mouthfeel and supple tannins. The wine offers lovely fruit purity combined with subtle savoury complexity, finishing long and attractive. At its best: now to 2022" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Nov 2017

"Even, dark ruby-red colour with good depth. This has a finely presented nose with good depth of dark raspberry and blackberry fruity, along with black pepper notes, subtle spicy and earthy nuances, hints of reduction, unfolding violet florals. The aromas are a little restrained in expression. Medium-bodied, the palate has lively and fresh fruit flavours of blackberries and dark raspberries harmoniously entwined with notes of black pepper, spice and lifted florals. The mouthfeel is fresh, with lacy acidity, and light, fine-grained tannin extraction. The wine has good linearity and flows softly to a lingering finish of dark raspberries, blackberries and pepper. This is a fresh and lively Syrah with harmonious flavours of dark raspberries, blackberries, pepper and spice notes, along with reductive hints on a fine textured palate. Match with beef and lamb, and Middle Eastern fare over the next 6 years. Hand-picked Chave clone Syrah fruit from hillside and old riverbed vineyards, destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented with whole berries to 13.0% alc., the wine spending 28 days on skins and aged 16 months in 25% new French oak barriques" Raymond Chan, Nov 2017

"Moderately dense, vibrant syrah with plum, dark berry, black pepper, violet, floral and spicy oak flavours. I like the wine's intensity and soft tannins - it has an old vine feel about it. A serious red at a fair price" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Apr 2018

Aromas of violet and cassis with a palate that is complex, fleshy and tastes of thyme, dark plum and earth. The palate is fleshy and the tannins chalky, with underlying power and precision.

Our grapes were grown on a hillside vineyard with a view over the plains and an old riverbed Vineyard, free draining and unyieldingly hot. The 2016 season was beautifully set up with a calm, hot summer. The fruit was hand harvested on the 8th and 22nd of April 2016. There is a blend of Chave, Grippat and MS clone, which were eventually blended in the winery.

Handpicked fruit was completely destemmed into open top tanks and left to sit for up to ten days until it began to ferment naturally. We plunged it gently and then with gusto as it was fermented hot. Primary ferment lasted for around nine days, then the wine was held on skins for a total of 28 days. It was pressed and run to the cellar to be aged in French oak barriques through winter before it went through malo in spring. The wine rested until blending on the 24th of August 2017.

Really good flavour for such a young wine. Ready to drink at the moment. Rich with a hint of spice.
