Description

"Light, even ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues, lighter on rim. The nose is soft, light and delicately fragrant with aromas of red cherry fruit and subtle, harmoniously interwoven notes of fresh herbs, unfolding red florals and some red liquorice. Medium-bodied, the palate possesses fresh, juicy and luscious flavours of red cherry fruit with subtle nuances of savoury herb and earthy elements, unfolding red floral notes. The fruit is supported by fine-grained, powdery, dry tannin extraction which builds in presence, and the palate is balanced by fresh, lacy acidity lending energu and vibrancy. This has a light, but positive core and sinewy line that carries to a firm, brisk finish of red cherry fruit and herbs. This is a light cherry and herb flavoured Pinot Noir with sweetness and richness and some earthy, herbal detail, a fine-grained sinewy extraction and line and fresh mouthfeel. Serve with tapas, poultry and pork over the next 4 years. Clones 667, 777 and some Abel, from ‘Dodd’s’ vineyard, indigenous yeast fermented with 10% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine aged in seasoned French oak barriques" Raymond Chan, Oct 2016

"Savoury and spicy, the bouquet shows dark cherry, smoked meat, nutmeg and mixed spice characters, leading to a elegantly weighted palate that is rounded and juicy. The wine is beautifully integrated and balanced, wonderfully structured by refreshing acidity and fine, delicately drying tannins. An Old World-inspired pinot offering engaging, savoury complexity. At its best: now to 2020" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Oct 2016

"Lightish Pinot Noir ruby, in the fourth quarter of depth. Initially opened the wine is mute. Decant it. It opens to a beautiful expression of dusky red rose florality on red grading to black cherry fruit, smelling supple and lightly oaked. Palate is perfect harmony with the bouquet, the florals extending right into the flavour, giving a sensuous charm to the cherry fruit. Subtlety of oaking is great. This is not a big wine, but it falls into a darker Volnay style, highly varietal. Cellar 3-8 Years" Geoff Kelly, Jun 2017

Ruby jewelled colour with aromas of raspberry, spice, dark toast and forest floor. The mouthfeel is bright and perky on entry with soft, savoury flavours and supple acidity. The structure is built on fine grain and chalky tannins with a lingering juicy finish.

This family vineyard of 2 hectares was planted in 1990 with 100% Pinot Noir of Dijon clones, 10/5 and some close planted Abel clone on low fruiting wires. The vineyard is situated on New York Street a 10 minute walk from the town centre but set on the legendary ancient river terraces of Martinborough. The soils are
predominantly free draining river gravels with varying depths of wind blown silts and a small amount of clay towards the eastern boundary. Low cropping vines resulted in intense fruit in the fantastic 2013 vintage in New Zealand.

The fruit was hand picked and carefully attended to over a sorting table. 10% whole bunches with stems were used in the fermenter. A 5 day cold soak was followed by the fermenter being warmed to encourage the wild ferment. Throughout the fermentation the vat was hand plunged to allow for gentle
extraction. After fermentation the must was macerated for an additional 3 days before being drained and pressed to 30% one year old oak barriques with the balance to three year old barriques allowing the elegance of the wine to be featured. After 10 months in barrel the wine was racked to tank to settled and then unfiltered to bottle.
