Description

"Bright, light straw-yellow colour, paler on the edge. The nose is finely concentrated with good intensity and penetration of lifted exotic florals and white stonefruits, with subtle notes of herbs. This is refined in expression. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has delicate, but up-front flavours of exotic florals and stonefruits, with subtle notes of herbs and honeysuckle . The palate is refreshing and lively with crisp acidity, the wine flowing an elegantly packed line with fine phenolic textures. The wine carries with good energy to a light, nuanced finish of florals and minerals. This is an elegant, dry Pinot Gris with exotic floral and stonefruit flavours with hints of honey and herbs on a brisk and refined palate with crisp acidity and a light, dry line. Match with seafood and poultry dishes over the next 3+ years. Pinot Gris from ‘Ward Farm’, free-run juice only, cool-fermented by indigenous yeasts, in stainless-steel with a small portion in seasoned barrels to 13.5% alc. and < 1 g/L RS" Raymond Chan, Nov 2017

"Stylish and complex, the engaging bouquet shows baked pear, fig, orange peel and floral characters with a touch of fragrant spice. The palate is succulent and beautifully weighted, and delivers excellent fruit power and roundness, backed by bright acidity. The wine offers ripe fruit intensity together with subtle savoury undertones. At its best: now to 2021" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Dec 2017

"From Ward in the Awatere. Machine to bin, off the skins, no sugar, no press wine, a bit of French oak. Pure, fresh and enticing on the nose with attractive table grape and lychee hints. Linear, fruity and pure with bright fruit and good lemony acidity. Dry and quite taut, but with some personality. Finishes brisk and salty" Jamie Goode, Jan 2018

'Dry pinot gris with mineral, green pear, apple and ginger flavours. Quite an austere style but with good purity and an impeccable balance. Good food wine - great with roast chicken" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Nov 2017

Characters from the location, natural yeast ferments and also some barrel aging give this Pinot Gris complexity and depth. The palate has an elegant structure with a creamy, textural mid-palate and a long finish.

Mahi, meaning ‘our work, our craft’, began in 2001, fulfilling a dream of ours. After 15 vintages it was time to do our own thing. With a strong focus on single-vineyard wines, and now backed up by a series of premium regional wines from Marlborough, the idea behind Mahi is to respect and promote the individuality of the various vineyards. The Mahi symbol represents the strength, life and growth of the native New Zealand frond (fern), with the understanding that wine should never be rushed to bottle, respecting its ability to evolve naturally over time.

The Mahi Marlborough Pinot Gris comes from one vineyard located just outside the township of Ward in the Awatere Valley.  It is owned and managed by Pam and Polly Francis. The fruit machine-picked to bin so maceration was minimised. A portion of this juice was barrel-fermented in older French oak to give greater weight, though ensuring that wood is not evident on the nose. The balance of the wine was fermented cool to retain the fruit characters from our vineyards. The final blend this year was made solely from free-run juice, as we feel it gives a more elegant and subtle wine, especially with Pinot Gris, that has quite ‘grey’ coloured skins.
