Rich aromatics of apricot, white peach and stone fruit introduce the 2014 vintage of Clifford Bay’s Chardonnay. On the palate the wine offers a fruit-forward style and crisp mouthfeel balanced by subtle oak characters.
Clifford Bay is where the river meets the sea, its name coming from nearby Clifford Bay, which is the point where the Awatere River meets the cool waters of the Pacific Ocean. Established in 1994, the vineyard is home to the famed Marlborough winegrowing region, which is the largest wine producing region in New Zealand. Since the first vintage in 1997 they have worked diligently to produce wines that are finely balanced, refreshing and pure.
Marlborough is one of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest areas: receiving about 2,400 sunshine hours per year. Warm days, cool nights and an average daily temperature of 18º C ensure that these wines possess vibrant fruit fl¬avours and heightened aromatics.
Fruit for this wine was harvested from both estate and grower vineyards located in Marlborough’s two marquee regions: the Awatere and Wairau Valleys. The Awatere Valley is the cooler of these two and features a unique stony Greywacke alluvium soil that is well draining and ideal for grapes. These grapes are known for their higher acid levels and distinct minerality. Whilst the Wairu Valley -located north of Awatere- derives its name from the Wairau River which ¬flows from the mountains in the west to the ocean at Cloudy Bay. It possesses shallow, stony, fast-draining soils that encourage low yields and vibrant, tropical fruit characters. Clifford Bay wine maker’s work to preserve both these regions varietal characters in this Chardonnay.
Their winemaking regime has evolved to emphasize the inherent freshness, balance and structure of their fruit. After harvest, the white grapes are gently pressed, fermented and aged in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to ensure freshness, bright aromatics, lush textures and balance. This wine is then aged exclusively in French oak.

Very good value. The wine is creamy with a honey after taste. Easy drinking for summer.
