Description

1 x Gran Familia Rioja Reserva 2011

Awarded 4 Stars: Bob Campbell, MW

Awarded 4 Stars: Joelle Thomson

awarded top 10: Metro Top 50 Wines of Winter 2017

"For a few dollars more, the Reserva from Gran Familia is bold and powerful, with more fruit intensity and new oak. Wild, smoky, tar and cocoa elements on the nose, creamy and rich in the mouth, there is sweet  currant fruit here, yet also good acidity and fine tannins. A wine that could cellar well for two or three years, but give it to your Aussie red-drinking mates and watch their amazed reactions. Spectacular wine at this price." Paul Tudor, Master of Wine. Top 10 - Metro Top 50 Wines of Winter 2017

"Mellow, developed but still lively red in an elegant, supple style. More vinous than fruity with violets, roasted nut and baked earth characters. Good drinking now. It represents very good value at this price." Bob Campbell, Master of Wine.

1 x Anciano Tempranillo Gran Reserva 2005

Awarded 93/100 points: Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"That you could possibly buy a wine older than 10 years for this price is reason enough to try this.” Taste Magazine

“This is wonderfully matured and seductive; the inviting bouquet shows dark berry, game, tapenade, leather and dried herb characters. The palate is beautifully weighted and expansive, and displays lovely mature fruit flavours combined with attractive savoury complexity, brilliantly structured by fine, chalky tannins, finishing persistent and delicately drying. A fabulous food partner.” Sam Kim Wine Orbit

Bodega Navalon was originally founded at the start of the 20th Century by Don Juan Sánchez. Valdepeñas means “valley of rocks” and Tempranillo grapes are hand-picked from small growers with vines averaging 30 year-old vines to make the classic red wine Anciano, which is aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 24 months. After extensive tasting and analysis of the best cuvées Norrel Robertson, Master of Wine selects only the finest wine for Gran Reserva.

1 x Don Aurelio Tempranillo Gran Reserva 2009

awarded 93/100 points: Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"A delightfully matured Tempranillo, the gorgeous bouquet shows dark fruit, roast beef, tanned leather, bay leaf and toasted almond characters. The palate is concentrated yet elegantly weighted, and displays fine texture and lovely mature flavours, wonderfully complemented by seamlessly woven fine tannins." Sam Kim Wine Orbit

The 2 Grand Reservas (particularly the 2009 ) were exceptional and are ready for drinking now. However the 2011 Reserva whilst great in fruit flavour needs a year or two to settle down.
