Description

"Estate-grown at Kumeu, in West Auckland, and barrel-aged for a year, the 2013 vintage (4*) is deeply coloured. An elegant rather than powerful red, it is sweet-fruited, with youthful, vibrant, plummy flavours, showing some savoury complexity, and a finely poised finish. Best drinking 2018+. (Bottled under screwcap and opened in 2016, the 2000 vintage, a Merlot/Malbec, was impressive – highly concentrated, spicy and leathery.)" Michael Cooper

Melbas’s Vineyard is a small plot of Merlot vines located at Waitakere Rd, Kumeu. These are now the only Merlot vines we have left in Kumeu and they comprise what has regularly been our best quality parcel of Merlot over many years.

We have named the vineyard in honour of our Mother Melba Brajkovich and coincidently it also produces her favourite eating grapes. The vineyard gives Merlot wine with a rich licorice aroma combined with the ripe plum and earthy, coffee-like characters we expect to see from this noble variety. The palate is full, rich and long and will benefit from 5-10 years of bottle age.
